Ante-Post Horse Racing Tips – 6th June Investec Oaks at Epsom

Ante-post horse racing betting tips for the Investec Oaks on June 6th at Epsom.

The Oaks, ran on the Friday of the Derby Festival, offers fillies the opportunity to take centre-stage over 1m4f on the famous Epsom Downs.  This year’s renewal looks to be a tricky contest, with a field filled with plenty of horses yet to show their true potential.

The current market favourite is the John Gosden Pretty Polly winner – Taghrooda (5/2 bet365).  This horse has always been thought of as a strong Oaks contender and she started the season as short as 10/1 to win the contest.  In her Newmarket maiden this daughter of Sea the Stars looked a classy type and she surprised a few punters scoring at 20/1, she was then stepped up to 1m2f for her first start of this season and made good opposition look ordinary scoring by an eased six lengths.  Despite her obvious class though, her form is by no means bullet proof.  Jordan Princess finished second to her in the Pretty Polly but was soundly beaten at Goodwood (albeit on bad ground) and Casual Smile (runner-up to Taghrooda when she won her maiden) was beaten in an Oaks trial at Lingfield.  Undoubtedly a good horse, she looks short enough considering her strength of her form and the fact that she is yet to win a Group race and will be up against far tougher opposition.

The colours of Sheikh Hamdan will also be carried by Tarfasha (7/1 SkyBet).  This horse has a good staying pedigree as a daughter of Teofilo who is a half sister to Derby placed Galileo Rock and stout stayer Sadler’s Rock.  She looked impressive when scoring at Naas in the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes on her latest start.  This filly improved markedly for the step to 1m2f and she travelled smoothly taking the race up a furlong out and going on to score well over older opposition.  Dermot Weld seems to think his filly will come on again for 1m4f on better ground and cannot easily be discounted.

Aidan O’Brien is always well represented in both the Oaks and the Derby and his team have claimed this contest three times in the past ten years with Was, Ouija Board and Alexandrova all successful.  Despite being beaten at Leopardstown over 7f on her final start of her 2 year-old season Marvellous (4/1 William Hill) improved no-end to claim the Irish 1000 Guineas recently.  The money has come for this horse of late so, providing she stays the extra half a mille, her chances must be taken seriously.

Tapestry (25/1 bet365) failed to fire at Newmarket but definitely has the more intriguing pedigree being out of the 2005 Champion filly Rumplestiltskin and by Galileo.  She’s difficult to fancy after that run at Newmarket though so whether she’ll line up is questionable.  Bracelet (25/1 William Hill) is another O’Brien runner who looks like she’ll appreciate the step up in trip.  By Montjeu, the favourite for the 1,000 Guineas was fancied before putting in a poor showing.  After the race Ryan Moore claimed she needed further so ignore her at your peril.

While Tapestry was flailing at Newmarket IHTIMAL (7/1 Betfred) was pressing hard for third and the filly has some of the strongest Group form on offer.  Already a winner of the UAE Oaks (an extended 1m1f), Saeed Bin Suroor’s filly was staying on nicely in the 1000 Guineas doing her best work late on.  By Sharmadal (French Derby Winner) she could be an interesting value pick.

Madame Chiang (16/1 SkyBet) started a strange string of results at York but was a deserved winner of the Musidora.  A winner on soft ground at Yarmouth, she then improved to take the Musidora when always pressing on close home.  Cambridge (25/1 Coral) was a friendless favourite in the market as she drifted badly and her challenge petered out on the rain softened Knavesmire.  She finished a lowly seventh but beat the third Regardez (50/1 Ladbrokes) with ease when she looked potentially useful at Nottingham over an extended mile.  She obviously disliked the ground and is probably best judged on her Nottingham form.

Looking at the current market, Taghrooda and Tarfasha could end up stating far shorter on the day and Bracelet could be the overlooked O’Brien filly coming into this and could well improve.  Despite this, the one to concentrate on is IHTIMAL who really looks to be the each-way selection in the race. She has a solid pedigree and the way she’s gone about her racing suggests 1m4f could be her trip.
