Carlisle United v Derby County Betting Tips and Predictions

Following the return of the Football League at the weekend, the Capital One Cup gets underway on Monday as Carlisle take on Derby live on Sky Sports and we have free football betting tips.

These two sides had vastly differing fortunes in their opening fixtures and have now had just one day to prepare for this Cup clash. League 2 side Carlisle opened up with a 1-0 home defeat against newly promoted Luton while Derby relied on a late winner to get past Rotherham as they won 1-0.

This came is an interesting one, with just one day of rest between their opening league games and this one, both sides may have to rotate things to keep players fresh for the league – which will be both sides priority.

Derby managed Steve McClaren though has indicated he won’t make huge changes, hoping to build some momentum and get minutes under players belts. Jamie Ward, Leon Best and Omar Mascarell all came off the bench on Saturday and could look to get a place in the starting eleven.

Carlisle boss Graham Kavangh has indicated though he will make changes to freshen things up for the test of a side two divisions above.

At this stage in last year’s competition, Derby went to Oldham and managed a 1-0 win on that occasion before overcoming Brentford 5-0 in the second round, Leicester ended their cup run at the third time of asking. This time last year, Carlisle were playing giant killers as they knocked out Blackburn on penalties and Leicester also knocked them out in the second round.

This could be an interesting clash and Carlisle will need to keep things tight if they want to get a scalp against their illustrious opponents and they have a massive problem finding the net. They managed just five goals in their last 16 league games last season and have just one goal in their last seven home competitive matches.

I expect Derby to get a result here but 7/10 doesn’t offer a load of value. Derby to win to nil is much better priced at 21/10 with Betfred. Considering Carlisle’s horrific form in front of goal and the fact Derby are one of the Championship’s best sides, they are a good price to win this and Carlisle may not offer too many problems.

It took Derby a while to get going on Saturday but they did eventually break down a resilient Rotherham side with an 82^nd minute goal. With players perhaps getting used to play together and a few tired legs, it may take them a while to get going again. Draw HT/Derby FT is another good looking price at 10/3 with Betfred as well.

Finally, with a 1-0 defeat for the home side and a 1-0 victory for the away side at the weekend I’m prepared to go for another big price. With the season new, things are still a bit unpredictable so this seems to be the best way to get a winner, under 1.5 goals is 3/1 with Betfred. 3 of Derby’s last 4 away wins in the Capital One Cup have been 1-0 and it is a big price for this market considering just how poor Carlisle are in front of goal.
