Chelsea v Tottenham Betting Tips and Predictions

Champions League chasing Tottenham travel across London to face league leaders Chelsea in what could be a classic London derby and we have free football betting tips.

With the midweek international games out of the way attention can once again turn to the Premier League as we enter that time of the year memorably termed 'squeaky bum time'.

Chelsea come into this game after a regulation 3-1 victory over Fulham. That win placed them 4 points ahead of second and six points ahead of Manchester City. Although Jose Mourinho argues, with some justification, that it is a “fake” lead because City have two games in hand. There can be no doubt that the Portuguese maestro will recognise the importance of winning in Saturday's late kickoff. Title rivals City don't play in the league again until March 15th and a nine point gap could have huge physiological significance.

Spurs meanwhile are a tough side to get a read on. They are coming off the back of back to back wins against Cardiff and Dnipro respectively. The optimist could argue that everything looks good. Those results are deceptive however. Cardiff are truly abysmal at the moment. To only win 1-0 is a poor showing.

Similarly the 3-1 against Dnipro was aided hugely by the sending off of Roman Zozulya for a petulant headbutt. If that hadn't of happened Tottenham would have likely crashed out of the Europa League.

Take those games out of the equation and suddenly the 1 nil defeats to Dnipro and Norwich look to be emblematic of a tactically poor Spurs side. It is this that will decide the match. Mourinho is a master tactician. He sets his teams up to get results. Tim Sherwood however, has been tactically exposed time and time again.

The bookies are certainly thinking along similar lines. Bet365 have priced Chelsea at 8/15 for the win. Whilst the draw comes in at 14/5 and a Spurs win at 2/11 with the same provider.

The price on a Spurs win is so long that it is tempting to back them on the odds alone. However, I think so little of Sherwood's tactical acumen that I cannot bring myself to back this. Equally though odds of 8/15 make backing Chelsea to win outright hard to justify.

Instead you should look for value in other markets. Spurs' main threat is Adebayor but I reckon that Chelsea's central defenders will keep him under wraps. Chelsea to win to nil is 13/8 with Coral and that looks a steal. Similarly Chelsea to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 is at the same odds with Sky Bet and that at least offers the protection of Spurs nicking a goal.

Lastly, I'm a big believer in form counting for a lot. It is fair to say that the Premier League hasn't seen the best of Andre Schurrle but his hat-trick against Fulham showed that he is at least approaching the form that saw him score 11 Bundesliga goals last season. Schurrle to score anytime is 12/5 at bet365.
