This NFC East clash is most definitely the highlight of the later NFL games this Sunday. It is a rematch between two teams that met in a very entertaining contest in week one that ended 36-31 in favour of Dallas as Eli Manning threw 3 interceptions effectively handing the Cowboys the game in the second half. Since then much has changed for both sides. The New York Giants opened the season with 6 straight losses before finally picking up their first victory in a week 7 win over the equally putrid Minnesota Vikings. That win has spurred the Giants onto an additional 3 straight wins since then, meaning that the Giants come into this weekends clash on a run of form that on top of home field advantage makes them the favourites to walk away with another win.

The NFC East continues to be the NFL’s most winnable division with teams consistently under performing and in the past half a dozen years teams have only needed 9 or 10 wins to clinch the division and that looks very much like being the case again this year. Dallas sits second in the division with a middling 5-5 record just a game behind the current division leading Philadelphia Eagles who have a 6-5 record heading into this weekends slate of games. Dallas has been the portrait of inconsistency this season winning back to back games only once all season. Dallas has won all of its games against division rivals so far but losses to elite teams such as the Chiefs, Broncos and Saints have left Dallas with as many wins as losses. An area where Dallas has struggled this year is on defence and that is an overriding reason for why they have struggled with consistency all year. The departure of defensive coordinator from a year ago, Rob Ryan to the New Orleans Saints has had a huge impact on the Cowboys defence which ranks last in the league in passing yards allowed per game at 313 yards. The run defence isn't much better, ranking 29th overall in yards allowed per game on the ground with 126.8. The offensive contributions of Tony Romo and Dez Bryant have kept the Cowboys in the hunt for a playoff berth all season long, but without a defensive identity the Cowboys will not make it far. Romo has thrown for 21 touchdowns and 2681 total yards this year with the majority going to Bryant who has 8 touchdowns and 749 receiving yards.

Eli Manning opened the season with 15 interceptions in the first 7 games and with at least one interception in each of those seven games highlighted by 4 inceptions against the Broncos in week 2 against his older brother Peyton. Eli has thrown for 3 interceptions on 3 separate occasions this season in what has largely been a year to forget for the Giants quarterback. His issues with turnovers have died down since the Giants started their current win streak with only 2 interceptions coming in the last 4 games. The running game has been a real issue for the Giants this year after Ahmad Bradshaw departed for the Colts during the offseason. The rise of David Wilson to number option in the run game had disastrous results as he displayed a lack of ability to hold onto the football turning the ball at crucial stages of the first game of the season in Dallas, leading the front office to bring back Brandon Jacobs who had previously played for the Giants in years passed. The pickup has been production for Big Blue as Jacobs has rushed for 4 touchdowns, which leads all Giants running backs and fumbled only once since rejoining the team. In the passing game the emergence of Rueben Randle has made up for what has largely been a subpar year for Hakeem Nicks. Randle has 6 touchdowns which leads all receivers and has given Manning another target in the red zone. Randle is another young receiver who has emerged for the Giants in recent years as a result of excellent development by the Giants front office and coaching staff.

The key for the Giants if they hope to keep their streak of victories going is to limit turnovers both in the running game and in limiting careless passes. If the Giants can find a rhythm with their running game and put pressure on a poor Cowboys defence then they should be able to set a tempo that will keep the Giants offence on the field as long as possible against arguably the worst defence in the league. For the Cowboys it is hope for much of the same from Romo and Bryant. If Romo can have another huge game against the Giants in New York this Sunday, then they should be able to fly home to Dallas with the season sweep over their division foes. I predict a revenge win for the Giants who look to be finding a groove at the right time with their current string of victories. If the Giants can take care of the ball which they have shown a improvement in recent weeks then they should be able to pull out the victory and set their sights on a division crown that looked impossible just a month ago.
