Many experts were building this match up to be the potential decider for the Runners-up place in the Group behind Italy. However, after Uruguay’s shock defeat to Costa Rica in their opening Group D game and England’s defeat to Italy in Manaus, this encounter has turned into a must win game for both sides if they want to remain in the tournament. Uruguay’s 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica has been one of the surprise results of the tournament so far. This was not to be, Costa Rica outplayed Uruguay pretty much across the pitch, playing with more pace, determination and freedom. That said, they will be boosted by the return of Luis Suarez who missed the opening game after recovering from knee surgery. It could prove a timely return to action for Uruguay’s all time leading goal scorer, not only because of his undoubted talent and ability to score goals, but to boost the moral of the whole team and lift spirits going into such a crucial game.

England on the other hand will have been somewhat encouraged by their performance against Italy and across 90 minutes probably deserved a draw. That said, they go into this match with no points on the board and, like Uruguay, know that a win here would put qualification for the knock out stages in their own hands going into the final round of matches.

If both teams play like they did in their opening games then it would not be hard to look beyond England in this fixture. However, this is the World Cup and both sides will be eager to prolong their competitive involvement in the tournament beyond Thursday night. While a draw would not be a disastrous result for both teams, they will be going all out for the victory.
