England World Cup Squad Betting Tips and Predictions
The World Cup is a mere 139 days away!
Yes not long until we all get to enjoy many late nights justified by, “I was watching the World Cup!” Even with it so far away there are many markets to bet on. We have cast our eyes over some of the outsiders for England’s World Cup Squad and the odds on them getting in the squad.
England World Cup Squad Odds:
Joleon Lescott – 2/1 William Hill
Has shown signs he is slowly declining as a footballer over recent months, however this is probably due to lack of match practice. Manchester City are unlikely to let him go during the current transfer window due to their central defensive problems. Can Hodgson select a defender who hasn’t been playing regularly? He has a precedent, selecting Rio Ferdinand in recent years.
Ricky Lambert – 9/4 Coral
Top class striker who impressed in his first England appearances in 2013. He will find himself behind Rooney, Sturridge & Welbeck in the pecking order but with Defoe isolating himself in the US, I personally would want to bring a player off the bench who is a threat from set pieces and in the box. Should Carroll start firing when back from his long absence, Ricky could find the West Ham man nicking his World Cup spot.
Adam Lallana – 6/5 William Hill
Lallana also impressed on debut for England against tough opposition. His inclusion will depend on the formation and style the England boss wants to play. If he decides to play a man off the striker, there are not many better English players who play that role. He provides the support for the strikers and can chip in with a few goals. Take note Tom Cleverly.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 2/1 BetVictor
Chamberlain will need to come back from his injury stronger than before. He has a lot to offer at a young age but will not want to miss out on this opportunity at the expense of another young fast winger who could put his England career at jeopardy.
Ashley Young – 4/1 with Bet365
Young seems to be the forgotten man but at 4/1 he definitely carries value. Unlikely to start, or even make the bench, but he’s an experienced squad player and could feature in the 23.
Michael Dawson -12/1 William Hill
Some standout performances for Tottenham this season although there hasn’t been much support for the defenders inclusion. The central defensive partnership seems to be set in stone, however a strong an experienced defender travelling may offer more. Has the edge over Lescott due to playing time.
Gareth Barry – 8/1 Bet365
He has recently proven to every fan that he still has a lot to offer a top Premier League side. Manchester City fans know he’s been doing it for years. Could be a useful back up or substitute to come on and keep possession. Bags of experience and composed in his play.
Ravel Morrison – 8/1 Bet365
He has shown a lot of promise in a West Ham team bereft of quality. Should he move in January it would be interesting to see him in an environment where he can thrive. Still very young, the experience may serve himself and England well as I see him as an England CM in the future.
Jack Rodwell – 20/1 Coral
A lot of good players ahead of him however if he can shake off his injury problems he may earn himself a ticket if he becomes the rotation in City’s midfield over Javi Garcia. Big price at 16/1 but may need to rely on a few injuries to the already competitive central midfield.
Wilfried Zaha – 16/1 William Hill
A January loan move could help Zaha live up to expectation, as he has currently fallen way short. With Walcott set to miss the World Cup, there is a potential winger position available and a host of young talent vying for it.
Thomas Ince -40/1 BetVictor
A move to the Premier League for Ince Junior could spark interest from Hodgson if he performs as well with the big boys as he has done in the Championship. He is an exciting young winger with plenty to offer, however there are more experienced young wingers wanting to travel to Rio, he, like Jack Rodwell, may need to rely on an injury or two.
