Horse racing betting tips for the 2.40pm Investec Coronation Cup at Epsom on Saturday.

The Group 1 Coronation Cup offers the perfect appetiser for the Derby main course and has attracted one of the best horses currently in training.  That individual will face seven other rivals over 1m4f of the idiosyncratic Epsom Downs.

With an official rating of 123 and five Group 1 wins to his name, CIRRUS DES AIGLES (11/10 William Hill) is a stalwart of World racing and looks to be as good as ever despite his ageing years.  The now eight year-old has contested some of the best races over the last half a decade and continues to perform at the highest level.  After an unimpressive seasonal reappearance, he bounced right back finishing second to Gentildonna in the Dubai Sheema Classic before going on to beat Treve in a battling performance in the Prix Ganay.  He followed that up with another victory, over albeit lesser opposition, in the Prix D’Ispahan and, according to connections, arrives here in fantastic form.  Clear on figures and clear on the standard of races he has contested, although best seen arguably over 10f, the trip and condition shouldn’t disadvantage him and he looks the one they all have to beat.

In opposition we have the Andre Fabre trained – Flintshire (7/2 Betfred).  The winner of last year’s Group 1 Grand Prix De Paris, at one point this horse headed the betting markets for the Arc.  He disappointed in that race and the race prior over 12f on soft ground and is clearly seen to best effect on good ground (unbeaten on ground without cut).  He looks to be well suited by the 12f and has to be respected given the fact his trainer has won this contest on a number of occasions.  He looks to be a serious challenger but will definitely be inconvenienced by the forecast heavy rain prior to post time.  With weather warnings being issued for southern parts of the UK there is every chance that the rain could well bring the ground back to good to soft or even soft before the off.  Any temptation to back this horse must be waited with until tomorrow.

There is a strong German challenge in the form of EMPOLI (10/1 bet365).  Last seen finishing fourth to Gentildonna in the Dubai Sheema Classic (only one length behind Cirrus Des Aigles) this horse had to come from a long way behind and was doing his best work at the line.  Another who seems best suited to good ground, this horse will be contesting his first race on British soil and could be somewhat of a surprise package.  At double figure odds he could well be the each-way play in the race, providing the rain abates.

Last year’s Oaks winner, Talent (7/1 Ladbrokes), returns to her beloved Epsom in the hope that she can make it two from two at the track.  She seemed to thrive in the Oaks when allowed to settle in behind and make ground up as they entered the home straight.  Her ability to handle the course is a huge positive when it comes to the undulations and unique characteristics associated with Epsom and she is sure to run another good race.  However, whether she is good enough to trouble the principles is another matter.  Her second place finish in the St. Ledger was good form but she looks like a true stayer and may well be unsuited by the steady pace of the race.

Four more runners make up the field and the rest of the home challenge.  Of those, Ambivalent (14/1 Betfred) is clearly the pick after having won the Group 2 Middleton on her latest start.  She put in a great performance to finish third in the Dubai Sheema Classic but is somewhat inconsistent and it would be a surprise to see her reverse the form with Cirrus Des Aigles.

Unsurprisingly, a lot will depend on the amount of rain that falls prior to post time.  If the ground continues to dry out and remains good then the challenges of both Flintshire and EMPOLI have to be respected with the latter preferred at the prices.  However, CIRRUS DES AIGLES is undoubtedly a superstar who has silenced his doubters time and time again.  His record is incredible and he looks to have the perfect opportunity to bolster both his tally and winnings by claiming victory here.  He will appreciate every drop of rain that falls and, given his conditions, will prove very difficult to beat.
