Football Accumulator Tips

Preston v Birmingham – Under 2.5 goals

Defensively, Preston have had an excellent first season back in the Championship under Simon Grayson and another clean sheet on Saturday at home to Reading, made it 11 clean sheets from a possible 20. They face Birmingham at Deepdale, a team who kept high flying Middlesbrough out at the weekend and are generally better on the road. They failed to score past Boro, but the Teessiders have the joint highest number of clean sheets with tonight's opponents. Birmingham are still missing a few players from their starting eleven and have failed to score in eight of their 20 games this season. Preston have kept six clean sheets in the last eight, only failing to keep out free-scoring Fulham and in-form Blackburn. Joe Garner has started to score for the Lilywhites, but they need to find more in front of goal. I think this one could be low scoring.

Cardiff v Brentford – Both Teams to Score? Yes

As we mentioned at the weekend, Cardiff had a terrific defensive record earlier in the season, but that's gone to pot in the last couple of games. Another crazy match at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday saw a 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday after the Bluebirds had taken a 2-0 lead. They face Brentford tonight at the same venue and under new manager Dean Smith, they claimed a draw in the West London derby with Fulham at the weekend. They progressed well under Lee Carsley and the former Walsall man will be hoping that their upward momentum can continue. Brentford have only failed to score once in their last eight games and that was against Hull, who have one of the meanest defences in the league. They should find joy against a side who have conceded two goals in all of their last four matches. Likewise, Cardiff have a few goals in them, scoring seven in their last three.

MK Dons v Sheffield Wednesday – Both Teams to Score? Yes

MK Dons have had well documented problems scoring this season, but they were incredibly unlucky not to find the net against Ipswich on Saturday lunchtime against Ipswich. Mick McCarthy admitted that the Dons were the better side and particularly in the second half, they hammered Dean Gerkin's goal, but weren't able to find a way through. It now leaves them without a goal in their last three games, but at home, they've only failed to score four times. Other than Saturday, they were against Hull and Preston – two sides who have outstanding defensive records and Birmingham who have kept five clean sheets away from home and have one of the best away records in the division. Dons scored against Charlton, Fulham , Blackburn, Leeds and Derby. Sheffield Wednesday have plenty of goals in them, particularly away from home as they came back from two down against Cardiff at the weekend. It was the same scoreline when they met Blackburn at Ewood Park and they lost 3-1 to Charlton during the Addicks mini-resurgence.

Huddersfield v Rotherham – Both Teams to Score? Yes

Huddersfield let us down at the weekend as they failed to beat notoriously poor travellers Bristol City, they shipped two poor goals, nobody marked Aden Flint and Rotherham will be hoping that kind of generosity once again. They did managed to find the net though, with Harry Bunn scoring a cracker and they do have plenty of players who can cause Rotherham problems. David Wagner's side have only failed to score three times at home all season – once to defensively sound Middlesbrough and against Leeds and QPR, all who are far better defensively than Rotherham. The Millers have only failed to score three times away from home all season and they've all been fairly recenty. Once again, Middlesbrough and Derby are two of the best backlines in the division and Blackburn have really tightened things up – keeping two clean sheets in just over 48 hours. I think both sides have enough defensive lapses in them to see both sides scoring in this fixture.

Walsall v Chesterfield – Walsall win

Walsall may have lost Dean Smith to Brentford, but there's absolutely no reason why their tremendous recent form should stop as a result. The club is well-run and Smith helped bring through a number of talented youngsters and of course, they have one of League One's most potent forces – Tom Bradshaw. They didn't play at the weekend as the weather put pay to that, so they should be fresh and ready for this one as they host out of form Chesterfield for a place in the 3rd round. The Spirerites have struggled since Dean Saunders was sacked, they've lost all of their last five games and scored just three goals in that time. Confidence will be low after failing to score at Bury at the weekend. The Shakers also hit the woodwork three times during the 90 minutes which suggests Chesterfield were lucky it was just a single goal. I think Walsall will have too much class for Chesterfield and they can qualify for the third round of the FA Cup.
