An already shambolic start to the season hit new lows this week for Chelsea, as they followed up their weekend defeat at Upton Park with a morale-sapping penalty shootout loss to Stoke City in the League Cup. Such is the state of affairs at the moment, Jose Mourinho even fielded a near full strength team for the clash and was still unable to book their place in the next round.

In fairness to The Blues' boss, Chelsea performed reasonably well on the evening and had the lion's share of the chances and the possession. Nevertheless, Eden Hazard's crucial penalty miss proved to be the difference on the night, and the loss has heaped yet more pressure on last season's champions ahead of a tricky tie with Liverpool at the weekend.

In stark contrast to their opponents, Liverpool fielded a far weaker side for their 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on Wednesday, with the likes of key players Phillipe Coutinho, James Milner and Christian Benteke all fresh for the weekend. The victory was Jurgen Klopp's first in four attempts – with the previous three all ending in low score draws.

Whilst Klopp has yet to set the world on fire during his early reign at Anfield, the German has certainly sured things up at the back and Liverpool have only conceded twice in the last four matches. As was the case with his predecessor, though, goals continue to remain a problem. All eyes will be on the match day squad as The Reds continue to sweat over the fitness of Daniel Sturridge.

This is an incredibly tough match to call, the visitors are in arguably the better form but continue to toil in front of goal. Chelsea's dire season keeps hitting new lows, though and it's hard to find any concrete evidence that would warrant backing them at such a poor price.

With this in mind, the draw may well be the most sensible option. Chelsea have in fact drawn two of their last three matches and Liverpool a ridiculous nine out of their last thirteen. Moving over to the goalscoring market and with both Diego Costa and Daniel Sturridge struggling for fitness, Christian Benteke appears the be the real stand-out option this weekend. The big Belgian recently returned from injury to score a wonderful header last weekend and should be fresh to lead the Liverpool attack after being rested in midweek. There were injury concerns for him ahead of this clash, but Jurgen Klopp is confident he will pass a fitness test. Finally for a nice little longshot to keep your eyes on for most of the match. As already mentioned, Jurgen Klopp has certainly tightened things up at the back since his arrival, with the centre back pairing of Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sahko playing a huge role in this form. The latter of the two might not be the easiest on the eye at the best of times, but he has turned out some excellent performances in recent weeks nevertheless.
