Hyundai Tournament Of Champions – Hope everyone had a great Christmas, after a few weeks off for the festive period TBT golf is back and our man @Gbenno79 is here to preview the first PGA tour event of 2014, starting Thursday and live on Sky Sports.

Hyundai Tournament Of Champions : Course form looks key at Kapalua

Course : Plantation Course at Kapalua, 7,452 yards, par 73. Perched along the seaside slopes of the West Maui mountains, the Plantation Course is known for both its breath taking views and – as evidenced last year – its exposure to the wind which at times can play havoc. More often than not, though, the trade winds stay gentle enough for the winner to reach at least 20 under over four days. Before last year’s weather-shortened event, the previous four editions all produced winners at no worse than 22 under. Opened in 1991, the course is one of the first Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw collaborations.

Inside The Field : Dustin Johnson heads a list of 30 strong tournament winners from the 2013 calendar year.  Adam Scott the world number 2 and the newly crowned Masters champion comes into this event in scintillating form after winning two legs of his native Australians triple crown. Six players among the top 16 in the world rankings are here and Rookie of the Year, Jordan Spieth, who was 2013’s John Deere Classic winner, highlights a group of 13 first-timers.

Selections

The Hyundai Tournament of Champions seems to have a trend of producing winners who have already had some success at Kapalua beforehand. Within the last five years only Jonathon Byrd has bucked that trend, also consecutive winners are likely here as there are only 30 players involved.

Matt Kuchar     8/1 win – William Hill – Open a new William Hill account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

“Kuch” has had a solid 2013 with twelve top-20 finishes, finishing in the top two 3 times.  Kuchars only win though, was at a very well respected event – The Memorial Tournament.  The only criticism you can throw at Matt is that he should have won more. In 2012, Kuchar did win The Players Event at Sawgrass, which is, as we all know, the fifth major.  Kuchar certainly has the ability to win this event and 2014 should see him win numerous times if he can handle the pressure.

Zach Johnson     14/1 win – Ladbrokes-  Open a new Ladbrokes account by clicking this link, and get a £50 free bet!

Johnson has won on the PGA Tour 10 times, most recently at the BMW Championship in September. Zach had a slow start to the 2013 season, but came to life from May onwards.  Iowa born Zach, does seem to win on courses where he has had previous successes.  Zach came 6th here back in 2009, just before he went on to win the Sony Open in Hawaii.  He has obviously got great credentials, being a Major winner already back in 2007.

Brandt Snedeker    14/1 win – Winner Sports – Open a new Winner account by clicking this link and get a free £50 bet.

“Sneds” is becoming a top class performer, although the only thing missing from his game, is a win in a top event. He has had a good few chances over the years to win a Major, but has faltered at the final hurdle. Most recently at the Masters back in April when he crumbled under the pressure, when looking to be a likely winner.  Snedeker amassed twelve top-20 finishes in 2013 with two wins, one at AT&T Pebble Beach in February and the other in July at the RBC Canadian Open.  Brandt will feel comfortable here after finishing third in this event back in 2013.
