Greatwood Hurdle Betting Tips and Preview

The big race on the Sunday of the Paddy Power meeting at Cheltenham is the Greatwood Hurdle and it is no easier to pick the winner of this race but hopefully I can point you in the right direction with a racing tip.

Generally horses that win this race are up and coming types and that certainly applies to most of the runners in this field.

Last year’s runner up Cash and Go is the ante post favourite with most firms (10/1 Ladbrokes). Nicky Henderson’s horse had a light campaign last season, only running the four times, but seems to have been laid out for this by the champion trainer.

He ran creditably in some the top two mile handicaps last season such as the Tote Gold Trophy at Newbury and it would be no surprise to see him capture this valuable pot.

However, a horse that I really like, if he runs, is John Ferguson’s Pine Creek (10/1 Coral). This 5-year-old is improving at a fast rate of knots and won impressively on his seasonal debut at Ascot.

The likely fast pace of this race will do his chances no harm at all, he seems to thrive on all types of ground and looks to me as if he is the most likely winner.

As well as these two potential improvers, there are so many horses in this who have a chance and two of them include Grumeti and Olofi. Grumeti, trained by Alan King, was one of the best 4-year-old hurdlers in the country but injury ruined last season for him and he only ran the once.

That run was at Ayr behind Court Minstrel, who could reoppose, but he ran a nice race considering he was off the track for almost a year and he won’t be found wanting for fitness so I expect him to run a big race (12/1 Bet365).

The other horse which has a solid chance is last year’s victor, Olofi, trained by Tom George. The 7-year-old’s form tailed off a bit after winning this race last season but he runs well fresh and always seems to save his best for Cheltenham (16/1 Sky Bet).

With a field as large as this, it’s always wise to look for each way tips and mine is a horse of David Pipe’s called Swing Bowler. She won her first five races in her career before running a fantastic race to finish third behind My Tent or Yours in the Tote Gold Trophy.

She was subsequently well beaten behind the great Quevega in the Mares Hurdle at the Festival but I fully expect her to run up to her Newbury form and she is a fantastic price to get in the places (16/1 Sportingbet).

Tip to win is Pine Creek for John Ferguson and my each way selection is Swing Bowler for David Pipe’s powerful team.
