Horse racing best bets for Saturday the 4th October from Ascot and Newmarket.

With most of the racing world concentrating on the action over in France, we have two cards from Ascot and Newmarket to remind us that the best of the action isn’t just at Longchamp.  With that in mind, we have our Editor’s best bets for Saturday available here.

2.40 Ascot

We start at Ascot with the Group 3 Cumberland Lodge Stakes, a race over 1m4f that has attracted a small but select field of five runners.  The market is headed, and rightly so, by ENCKE (6/4 Ladbrokes) the former winner of the St Leger back in 2012.  After being tested positive for steroids this horse wasn’t been on a racecourse until August of this year when he ran very respectable race, fishing only just over a length behind Pether’s Moon (who reopposes today 5lbs worse at the weights).   The horse would clearly come on for the run and performed creditably when stepped into Group 1 company for the Irish St Leger, a race where the winner had the run of the race.  Back in trip to 12f looks ideal, especially as the lack of pace in the race should encourage jockey Paul Hanagan to lead from the front and make sure the stamina of the field is truly tested.  Both jockey and trainer are in flying form and, considering Godolphin claimed this prize 12 months ago, this horse looks to have every chance to claim his first victory in two years.

The biggest danger could well be the progressive, and unexposed, multiple Brazilian Group winner Energia Fribby.  This filly made her debut for Marco Botti at Chester where she won well considered that was her first run and the ground was described as ‘tacky’.  She receives the benefit of 4lbs from the selection and will have come on for her first run, but the strength of her Brazilian form is debatable and she could well struggle against the male opposition on show here.

3.30 Newmarket

Moving on the highlight of the British racing on Saturday, the Group 1 Sun Chariot Stakes and we have a competitive looking race for our second best bet.  The Sir Micheal Stoute trained INTEGRAL (7/2 Betfred) is the selection here after impressing in her victories in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes and Falmouth Stakes.  Despite falling fowl of Esoterique on two occasions this season, excuses can be made for both defeats (needing her run on the first start and a tactical contest which didn't suit on the latest run).  A return to Newmarket on good to firm ground looks ideal and, providing this race isn’t run at a dawdle then Ryan Moore should be able to pounce nearing the line.

Dangers are numerous, with the likes of Fintry and Miss France both unexposed sorts who have perfumed well this season.  The former was impressive at Sandown on her leas test start and has had this race as her target for a long time.  The latter won this season’s 1,000 Guineas over course and distance and is unbeaten on two starts at this track.  However, both have questions to answer, primarily Fintry who doesn’t look the simplest of rides and has shown her best form on ground with give in it.
