Horse racing betting tips for the 2.20pm Stowe Family LLP Grad Cup at York on Saturday.

One of the highlights of York’s Saturday card is the Stowe Family LLP Grand Cup run over 1m6f.  The race has produced some good winners in recent years including both Cavalryman and Times Up who went on to win Group races.  This year’s renewal looks as competitive as ever and has the potential to be a great contest.

The field is headed by three runners who all share a mark of 108.  The first of those is FIRST MOHICAN (9/2 Coral), a horse who rose rapidly through the ranks as a handicapper before trying his hand at Group level.  He returns to a level that he will be competitive at and impressed last time out when third in a very decent Listed race.  He has won at the York before and should put in another bold show but wouldn’t want the ground too soft.

Rawaki (5/1 SkyBet) was unlucky when beaten in the Braveheart Stakes last time out and hopes to go one better here.  He has the form to go reasonably close and, if reproducing the same performance that saw him finish third in the John Porter Stakes, he would have sound claims.

Godolphin have won the last two renewals of this race and enter two runners in an attempt to land the hat trick.  Cap O’ Rushes (8/1 William Hill) is the highest rated after some good attempts in Group contests last season.  Despite that, he’ll need to improve on recent form and was well beaten in his last start at York.  Statutory (16/1 SkyBet) is returning after a brief spell in Dubai in which he failed to land any serious blows.  If he was able the replicate the form he showed in the Jockey Club Rose Bowl he’d have a slight chance of making the frame.

Of the others, Clever Cookie (6/1 Betfred) is fairly interesting after a great start on the flat.  Rated 144 over hurdles certainly gives credence to the belief that he is a very good horse and he should appreciate the course (winner last time out).  However, this is a big step up in class and trip and he has something to prove.

Renew (12/1 bet365) finished ahead of Statuatory at Meydan during the Spring but was far behind the rest and failed to make a mark in the Jockey Club Stakes last time out.  Despite that he has good form in the book, although both the trip and ground could be against him.

A lot of the rest will really have to improve to have a chance.  Repeater (16/1 William Hill) has some of the best form but hasn’t reproduced it in a while, Ralston Road (11/1 SkyBet) also failed to cause any upsets at Meydan and will need to improve and Alta Lilea (25/1 Betfred) could be an interesting outsider if able to repeat the efforts she showed in both the Lily Langtry and Park Stakes.

It is definitely a tough race to decipher but historically speaking it is normally won by a horse towards the front of the market and if my pin was to drop anywhere it would be on FIRST MOHICAN.  It is a tentative selection but I feel that he holds the best recent form and, with the ground due to dry a little, conditions should be ideal for another good performance.
