Horse racing betting tips for the 2.20pm Tapster Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday.

Run over 1m4f, this year’s renewal of the Listed Tapster Stakes has attracted a small yet competitive field of six runners.  The race has been won by the likes of Sea Moon and Noble Mission in recent seasons and this year’s field will be looking to emulate their success.

Three of the main contenders re-oppose 14 days after a similar Listed contest took place on good to soft ground at Ascot.  That race saw Gatewood (13/8 Betfred) claim victory under Frankie Dettori, who is handed the ride once more.  After finishing second of his seasonal reappearance, this John Gosden trained six year-old found the necessary improvement to hold his challengers at bay looking like he was doing just enough in the final stages at Ascot.  He has only had one start at Goodwood, finishing a well beaten third over 1m4f.  Although he still looks progressive, his 3lb penalty should make things more difficult and he could be vulnerable.

Second to Gatewood at Ascot was the Richard Hannon trained Pether’s Moon (15/8 Ladbrokes).  Officially the highest rated runner in the field on a mark of 110, this four year-old progressed through the handicap ranks last season and ended his three year-old campaign with an impressive Listed victory at Kempton over 12f where he beat Gatewood by just under 4 lengths (he was in receipt of 6lbs).  He started his 2014 campaign by finishing a good second to Gospel Choir at Newmarket.  The form of that race has been franked with the winner going on to claim another competitive Group 2 prize at York.  Definitely seen to best effect on good to firm ground, he perfumed admirably at Ascot in conditions that wouldn't have been ideal and, now with a 3lb swing, could pose a serious challenge to Gatewood.  Again, conditions are likely to play a significant part in Pether’s Moon’s claims with further rainfall not ideal.  Nevertheless, his form looks strong and he has to be respected with C&D winning form.

KELINNI (9/1 bet365) may well have finished some nine lengths behind Gatewood and Pether’s Moon at Ascot but that was his first start for Marco Botti and should do much better here.  He looked to get outpaced coming into the home straight and wasn’t given an unduly hard time once he had made his challenge.  He has a strong record, running in some vey good Group races in Australia, and a repeat of some of his best form will give him an excellent chance.  However, this will be the first time he will encounter the idiosyncrasies of Goodwood and it is an unknown to if and how he will handle the track.  He has form that ties in with the market principles as he beat Gatewood by just over two lengths in a Group 3 handicap in 2012 in Australia.  A winner on a variety of different types of ground, the conditions shouldn’t pose any problems and he is definitely one to watch if receiving strong market support.

Of the others,  Aussie Reigns (8/1 SkyBet) always seems to run well at Goodwood but has had a long campaign over in Meydan and back here on the all-weather, and may well be vulnerable to fresher horses.  Blue Surf (12/1 Betfred) is a good quality handicapper who has performed well in a number of contests, yet he has some 6-13lbs to find with the principles to be competitive now stepped up in grade.  Finally, Mirasaale (20/1 Coral) was last seen finishing last of 14 on his first start of the season in the Winter Derby and will need to come on considerably from that to feature here.

With conditions looking set to deteriorate, Pether’s Moon could well find himself disadvantaged by the prevailing conditions once again.  On that basis Gatewood looks likely to confirm the form between the pair as he has shown a good ability to handle ground with cut in it.  However, the value could lie with Marco Botti and KELINNI.  A high class horse in Australia, his first run for he knew stable wasn’t without promise and he could well give the market principles something to think about.  He handles all types of ground and have previous winning form over Gatewood.  On the basis that he will have come on a good amount for his first run i’m happy to side with Kelinni as an interesting sort who could well cause an upset.
