Horse racing betting tips for the 2.40pm Temple Stakes at Haydock on Saturday.

The highlight of Saturday’s racing is the Group 2 Temple Stakes at Haydock Park.  Ran over the minimum distance of five furlongs, the race usually provides important clues towards Royal Ascot.

The Edward Lynam trained SOLE POWER (3/1 SkyBet) won this race back in 2011, and looks to have another solid chance of repeating that success.  When in full stride, this horse is one of the quickest sprinters on the planet, allied to the fact that he has a potent turn of foot.  The seven year-old gelding was impressive in the closing stages of the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket on his return, beating four of this race’s rivals in the process. Sole Power is a Group 1 winner running in a Group 2 and therefore warrants the utmost respect.

Kevin Ryans' Hot Streak (9/4 bet365) is the obvious danger and there is not a whole lot between him and Sole Power on form.  He lost out by roughly half a length last time out after travelling into the race very strongly, and the talented Oisin Murphy takes over in the saddle. He is much more unexposed than some of his rivals, having only had the seven runs to date, and there is no doubt there is more improvement to come.  A big run can be expected once again, although it seems like he will have to improve a little bit to reverse the form with Sole Power.

The David Barron trained Pearl Secret (7/2 Ladbrokes) was very well backed last time out in the Palace House Stakes but could never land a blow and he will have to improve a good deal to reverse the form with the two market principles.  He is likely to get his ground but I just feel that his preferred trip is six furlongs judging by the way he finished off in the King’s Stand, and he may be vulnerable to speedier types.

Last years winner of the race – KINGSGATE NATIVE (7/1 Ladbrokes), is another noteworthy entrant.  This veteran nine year-old showed he still possess plenty of quality when finishing second behind Sole Power last time out.  He has a fine record in this race, having won the race back in 2010 as well as 2013.  Although he is one that certainly won’t want any more rain, his record in the race can’t be ignored, and if things fall right for him, he could be on for the three timer.

Jim Goldie is doubly represented with stable stars Jack Dexter (12/1 SkyBet) and Hawkeyethenoo (25/1 bet365), but both need to bounce back from disappointing runs in the Duke of York last week.  Jack Dexter has been disappointing on both his starts this year and would need a big return to form, whilst Hawkeyethenoo will probably find a few too good in this class.

SOLE POWER and KINGSGATE NATIVE have won three of the last four renewals of this race and look set to dominate once again.  Sole Power is a leading five furlong sprinter on good/fast ground and looked as good as ever when winning last time out.  His ability to travel and destroy fields with his potent turn of foot make him the most likely winner, but Kingsgate Native’s record in this race can’t be ignored and I wouldn’t be surprised if he sneaked into a place.
