Full race preview and free racing betting tips for the 2.50pm Investec Derby Trial at Epsom.

The first meeting on the flat at Epsom Downs normally provides a cracking day’s racing headlined by the Investec Derby Trial.  This Conditions event over 1m2f gives horses a taste of the test a top class racehorse is likely to face around the undulations of Epsom with the added bonus of an automatic entry to the Derby for the victor.  Despite its recognised trial status, the last winner to go on to claim Derby honours was Blue Peter in 1939.

Hartnell (5/2 SkyBet) is the market favourite after an impressive 2yo season where he racked up three victories with his best form, arguably, when finishing behind Piping Rock at Salisbury.  As a son of former Derby winner Authorized, he should enjoy the trip and, if he runs to previous form, he should have good chance.  The negatives surrounding this horse include the drying ground and the potential of some of his less exposed rivals.

John Gosden won this race with Debussy in 2009 and Raincoat in 2007, and he sends a horse with the same connections as Debussy in Marzocco (9/2 Coral).  The horse was impressive on debut at Kempton back in October but it is hard to derive how good that form is.  The horse will probably come on for the run, as will the trainers’ second entry Nonno Giulio an Italian recruit who looks to be the second string on jockey bookings.

Godolphin have been on fire recently and trainer Charlie Appleby sends Moontime (5/1 bet365), a horse who won a good Newmarket maiden on debut.  The form of that race has worked out with Munjaz winning last time out.  The horse has already been gelded so he would not be able to run in the Derby but that could give him an upper hand over precocious 3yo colts and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him run well.

Alongside Hartnell, Mark Johnston also saddles STARS OVER THE SEA (12/1 William Hill) who has listed race form despite flopping in that race.  The trainer has mentioned how it would be more important for this horse to win as he is not entered in the Derby.  I think that the booking of Kieran Fallon is very interesting as he is one of the best round Epsom.  If the form behind Chief Barker and Chriselliam stands up then he could have a huge chance.

Of the others; Arantes (33/1 William Hill) has a good 2yo season but will have it all to do on form and Signposted (8/1 SkyBet) will also have to recover after a poor run in the Tattersall’s Millions Trophy.  Trip To Paris (14/1 Coral) has some very good form and was closer to Chief Barker than Stars Over The Sea, but there are stamina doubts to answer.  Our Channel (8/1 bet365) won a Class 5 contest and this represents a very big step up in class and is probably best watched.

Both Marzocco and Moontime will have their supporters but I think the booking of Kieran Fallon could be the clincher for STARS OVER THE SEA. The jockey’s experience at Epsom could be crucial for a horse who needs to win if he is going to have any chance of progressing to the Epsom Derby itself.
