Horse racing betting tips for the 4.00pm Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood on Friday.

The highlight of the racing on Friday from Goodwood is the Cocked Hat Stakes, a Listed race over 1m3f which features six runners.  Former winners of this race include the likes of Disclaimer, Michelangelo and Dubai Millennium.

Last time out, Barley Mow (3/1 SkyBet) made all to win a Listed race at Newmarket, beating the favourite on that day, Postponed, by three lengths.  The two re-oppose today and the step-up in trip should benefit the Richard Hannon runner.  One serious concern would be the rain softened ground as Barley Mow’s best form has come on better ground, and he performs nowhere near as well when there is cut.  He is obviously in great form, but the ground conditions are a concern.

Until last time out, Luca Cumani’s POSTPONED (5/1 bet365) had shown great promise in a number of races, most notably when finishing third behind the likes of Toormore and The Grey Gatsby in the Group 3 Craven Stakes.  This race represents another step-up in trip, and based on his latest run he didn't seem suited to the extra distance.  However, that evidence might not be conclusive and every horse can be forgiven for one bad run.  The trip may not have been his downfall and he has to be respected in this field.

John Gosden has a great recent record in this race having won it three times since 2009.  This year he is represented by Marzocco (3/1 Coral), with Ryan Moore taking the ride.  Last time out he was a fast finishing second in a valuable conditions race at Epsom, coming from off the pace to only just fail.  The extra furlong in this race looks to suit, as will the rain that has fallen.  He is a progressive type and definitely has a decent chance to come out on top.

Observational (5/2 bet365) has finished second in both of his career starts, including in a valuable sales race at Newmarket last time out.  On that form, he must be given serious respect, and the slight step up in trip looks to suit too.

Andrew Balding’s Signposted (14/1 William Hill) holds an entry for the King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot next month, but needs to find a bit more here to be a serious contender.

Connections of Snow Trouble (33/1 Coral) will be hoping that a return to Goodwood will help him bounce back to the promise he showed in previous contests.  He was well held when upped in trip last time out at Newmarket, and it’s unknown whether the extra furlong in this race will suit.

There isn’t much to separate a few in this race, but the form POSTPONED showed when finishing behind Toormore and The Grey Gatsby clearly stands out.  He can be forgiven for his latest run, and there could be more to come from this colt.
