Horse racing betting tips for the 4.05pm Coolmore Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan.
Sunday's racing highlight comes from Navan in the form of the Group 3 Vintage Crop stakes named after Dermot Weld's star stayer. Seven of the best staying horses in training line-up to contest this 1m6f contest.
Coolmore, the sponsors of the race, were well represented at the five day stage but rely on last year's St Leger victor – LEADING LIGHT (15/8 William Hill). He was found out stepped down in trip in the Arc on his final start of 2013, getting outpaced at a vital stage before plugging on again. This trip will suit better but he does has to concede weight all round thanks to the penalty for his St Leger success.
Royal Diamond (9/2 bet365) wouldn’t have the potential for improvement as o some of the other runners here, nonetheless he lacks nothing in a battle and looked as if age wasn't a hindrance last season. He claimed victory at Ascot in the stayer’s contest on Champions Day when showing his trademark tenacity to come out on top. He certainly won't lack anything in the finish but may find himself vulnerable to one or two others.
Saddler's Rock (12/1 Coral) will need this to turn into a real test if his superior stamina is going to come to the fore. He hadn't looked at his best so far this year in Dubai but did finish in front of both Royal Diamond and Pale Mimosa in the Irish St Leger over this distance so, if back to his best, is far from an outsider.
Pale Mimosa (7/4 Coral) represents Dermot Weld here, a lightly raced five year-old who was last seen finishing behind Royal Diamond at Ascot. She was possibly held up a little too far back on that occasion on her first attempt at 2m, she travelled well but found others got first run on her there. She gets a handy weight pull but hasn't tasted success beyond Listed level yet so this will prove tougher, despite the impressive current form of the stable.
For a Group 3 race it is a solid lineup with a pair of Group 1 winners in LEADING LIGHT and Royal Diamond as well as a Group 2 winner in the form of Saddler's Rock. It is likely to come down to Leading Light and Pale Mimosa who are the picks at the weights. There might not be much between them, both first time out winners last season, but preference is for the former who has won in higher Grades this in the past.
