Sandown’s evening meeting on Thursday includes the Group 3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes over the classic 1m2f distance. This race is usually used as a stepping stone for horses looking to contest races at the highest level later on in the season.

Top Notch Tonto (4/1 SkyBet) has to give 3lbs away to his four rivals for his Group 2 victory in the Superior Mile. He’s stepping up in trip to 10f for only the second time in his career, the first came last season at York where he failed to make an impact. Despite running in much classier races, apart from a good second in the QEII Stakes, he has failed to land a blow. The drop in grade may help, as will the soft ground, but the 10f could be a step too far.

Sheikhzayedroad (12/1 William Hill) has some good form from last season around this trip at a level slightly below this standard. The ground shouldn’t be any trouble as he has won on soft before and the trip will be no bother, but he has failed to land any significant victories in this class and will probably find the others too good.

Remote (7/2 bet365) is probably the most interesting contender and reappears for the first time since last summer. Although he lacks the experience of the others, he has shown strong form which confirms his place as a Group horse. The ground could well be problematic and connections have stated that they will walk the track before deciding whether or not to run this horse. He has never encountered ground worse than good and also has to overcome a 300 day absense.

HILLSTAR (9/4 bet365) was beaten comfortably on his reappearance in the Ormonde Stakes despite being well fancied. Nonetheless, this horse has some of the best form on offer after contesting some top Group races last season. He is definitely up to this standard and this potentially lacks the quality he has come up against recently. His trainer Sir Michael Stoute has an excellent record in this race with 5 victories since 1996 and always sends his best here.

Sharestan (3/1 William Hill) was touted to be a potential Group 1 performer at one point in his career, but has only won twice since joining Godolphin. The horse may have had a setback after not heading to Dubai this year, but will handle the ground, will get the trip and cannot be dismissed.

Top Notch Tonto and HILLSTAR are the only horses with form at the highest level currently in the book and with Sir Michael Stoute normally sending his best of the best to this race it would be worthy to follow that angle and side with Hillstar.
