Horse racing betting tips for the 8.20pm Heron Stakes at Sandown on Thursday.

Five horses line up to contest this year’s renewal of the Heron Stakes, a Listed race for 3 year-olds run over an extended 1m.  Despite the small field, this race looks hugely competitive and will take some winning.

The highest rated runner on official figures is Master Carpenter (3/1 SkyBet) off a mark of 100.  A winner over 5f and 6f at the start of his career, this horse has contested good quality Group and Listed contests over a variety of distances since then.  Most recently campaigned over 10f, he has finished in behind the likes of Pinzolo and Western Hymn.  Usually held up off the pace, he will be hoping the conditions take their toll on his rivals and his stamina can come to the fore.  Undoubtedly he sets the standard, but he is far more exposed than the others and could well be vulnerable on ground that is probably not ideal.

One horse with clear unknowns in terms of the ground is Patentar (4/1 Betfred).  A useful winner of his maiden at York over 7f on good ground he made his seasonal reappearance at Newmarket in the Greenham where he managed to finish only six lengths behind Toormore and The Grey Gatsby.  The former was last season’s Champion 2 year-old and the latter went on to win the Dante at York.  Based on that form, he looks to have strong credentials for victory, especially considering the tongue tie that was applied for his maiden victory and then removed in the Greenham has been reattached.  However, he is yet to encounter ground worse than good and with the unsettled weather set to continue at Sandown, this race could well be run on heavy by the off.

The ground shouldn’t pose a problem for Indy (10/3 Betfred), the once raced victor of a 6f maiden at Doncaster in November on soft ground.  Sent off at 14/1 this David Barron trained runner duelled with the race favourite before asserting near the line to win by four lengths.  He travelled well throughout the race and seemed to cope very well with the give underfoot.  Stepping up in trip should suit on his pedigree (sire won the Irish 2,000 Guineas on soft ground) and he certainly could be one to follow for the rest of the season.

In terms of ground, similar comments apply to END OF LINE (11/4 William Hill), a colt by Pastoral Pursuits out of a Montjeu mare.  A winner on soft ground on his maiden at Doncaster by a comfortable six lengths he was a tad unfortunate on his first start of the season at Sandown when faced with a wall of horses at the crucial part of the race.  Nonetheless, he battled on and finished only four lengths back from the winner who was in receipt of 4lbs and had the run of the race out in front.  Clearly thought of very highly, he was then entered in the French 2,000 Guineas where he unable able to land a blow in a competitive Group 1.  Back down in class, on ground that shouldn’t be a concern, on a track he is familiar with, he looks to have solid claims.

The final runner is Nonno Giulio (16/1 Coral) for John Gosden and William Buick.  A winner in Italy, this horse was beaten comfortably at Epsom on his only start of this season.  Connections will be hoping a return to 8f suits and that he handles the ground (yet to race on anything worse than good to soft).  He looks to be the clear outsider of the five and should struggle to make an impact.

In terms of tactics this race could well develop into a bit of a mess with no really clear front runner.  Indy could well lead if given the opportunity as he looked full of speed over 6f at Doncaster but that tactic may prove counter productive as he has stamina to prove.  With that in mind, it could pay to look for a fast finisher who is guaranteed to handle the ground and that could well be the bio of END OF LINE.  Guaranteed to get the trip in the testing conditions, in a small field he could well make up for his lack of luck in running last time he encountered the Sandown course.  Obviously held in high regard at Andrew Balding’s stable, End Of Line could well be the best equipped to deal with the conditions.
