The Alan King trained L’UNIQUE (8/1 William Hill) has done little wrong this season, finishing in third at the Cheltenham Festival behind the mighty Quevega.  She was an impressive winner last time out at Sandown, leaving the rest of her field a nice eight lengths behind.  This step up in trip is unknown, and that looks to be her biggest test.

Richard Lee’s Kris Spin (11/1 SkyBet) has given connections a fantastic season, with a win and then two seconds coming from his 3m starts.  Big Hands Harry (6/1 Betfred) has been useful in three novice hurdles for Nicky Henderson, but will need some improvement on his handicap debut.  AP McCoy’s mount Join The Clan (7/1 William Hill) looks unexposed and could well improve further.

1.50pm Tip – L’UNIQUE (E/W) (8/1 William Hill)

The trainer and jockey combo that stand out in this race for me is the booking of Richard Hughes by Lady Cecil onboard HAMELIN (11/4 bet365).  Hughes has won on the horse in its last two outings and he looks very much like the type of horse that could progress quite easily, and his clearcut win last autumn was memorable.

The rain at Ascot will not suit the chances of Semeen (7/1 SkyBet) for trainer Luca Cumani.  He won three out of four last year, but has been off since July, and to come back on ground that isn’t ideal, is a tough ask.  The Lock Master (20/1 Coral) for Michael Appleby and Jamie Spencer has an impressive run of form on the all-weather, but will have to dig in deep to come out on top in this race.

2.05pm Tip – HAMELIN (WIN) (NAP) (11/4 bet365)

QUEEN’S PRIZE (4/1 Coral) is bred and owned by Her Majesty, and impressed when winning a seven-furlong maiden at Kempton in September, finishing with real purpose and going away from her rivals again at the end of the race.  She is bred to be a proper middle-distance horse and is just the type Sir Michael Stoute excels with.

Andrew Balding’s Casual Smile (3/1 Betfred) went close on all three starts last year and should have progressed throughout the winter. Criteria (10/1 Coral), for Micheal Stoute and Ryan Moore ran well in his maidens, and made all over 1m4f on his latest start at Kempton.  He will need to step forward to figure here but it wouldn’t be a total surprise if he did so.

2.20pm Tip – QUEEN’S PRIZE (WIN) (4/1 Coral)

AREA FIFTY ONE (6/1 William Hill) looks like he should be given another chance at Listed level in this race.  His previous attempts in this Class have ended in failure but now with Nicky Henderson, he posted a decent effort when winning at Doncaster back in March.  He beat the re-opposing Gatewood (7/1 William Hill) – a previous Group 3 winner – and on the same terms he can finally land a deserved prize.

Pether’s Moon (9/2 Ladbrokes) for Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes, was a good second last time out in a Group 2 race at Newmarket and, if able to reproduce that effort on easier ground, will be bang in with a chance.  Harris Tweed (6/1 SkyBet) was a tailed off favourite on his reappearance this season in a Group 3 on this track.  If he’s back to his best he’s the one to beat, but that run last time out was very disappointing.

2.40pm Tip – AREA FIFTY ONE (E/W) (6/1 William Hill)

2.55 Lingfield

SUDDEN WONDER (7/2 Coral) can step up on his recent Newmarket success and mark himself as an Epsom contender with victory in this race.  The son of New Approach won one of his three juvenile starts, finishing behind fellow Godolphin runners, including subsequent Breeders' Cup winner Outstrip, on the other two occasions.  His eight-length victory in a 1m maiden was pretty impressive and the further they went, the better Sudden Wonder looked.  He was stepped up to 10f on his return, when he landed an excellent pot for trainer Charlie Appleby in the Tattersalls Millions Trophy.  He found plenty for pressure and while he would need to improve considerably to take a hand in the Investec Derby itself, the extra furlong or so in this Listed heat is a positive.

Aiden O’Brien’s pair look to be his main rivals, with both Mekong River (9/2 William Hill) and Blue Hussar (6/1 Ladbrokes) looking promising individuals for a trainer who has won this race three times in the last six years.  Until last time out, the former had been unbeaten, but he can be forgiven that disappointing run as the ground was extremely testing.  Blue Hussar is a winner on his only start, and was bred to stay this distance.  He’s unexposed and is probably still green, but you can never underestimate the team of O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore.

2.55pm Tip – SUDDEN WONDER (WIN) (7/2 Coral)

Goldolphin’s FEEDYAH (7/1 Betfred), trained by Charlie Appleby is only lightly raced but has shown some useful form so far in her career. Her opening mark looks fair, and she looks like she’s still got some improvement in her and is an unexposed runner who looks interesting.

Ribbons (2/1 Ladbrokes) made her seasonal reappearance at Kempton a couple of weeks ago, and chased home a classy sort in Zurigha.  She is another in the race who looks on the up.  Rasheeda (8/1 bet365) hasn’t been able to add to her maiden win, and needs to find a bit more, along with Lady Frances (16/1 SkyBet) who was a fair third on her reappearance but stamina looks a doubt.

3.15pm Tip – FEEDYAH (WIN) (7/1 Betfred)

3.30 Haydock

VIBRATO VALTAT (5/1 Betfred) should have a good shout in the jumps feature, the Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle – better known as the Swinton Hurdle.  The five-year-old has turned in some good performances this term, most notably when winning an Exeter Listed event in February and finishing third in the Imperial Cup.  Paul Nicholls opted to sidestep both Cheltenham and Aintree and his patience paid dividends when Vibrato Valtat won a nice event at Ayr, although he may have been slightly fortunate as his main rival was virtually taken out at the last.  He races off a mark just 1lb higher than in the Imperial Cup and a repeat of that form should see him on the premises.

Trainer Don Cantillon enters As I Am (12/1 Coral), but the ground at Haydock looks a big concern.  The six-year-old clinched her second Listed prize of the campaign and her eighth career victory overall with a determined display at Cheltenham last month and now takes on the boys.  She looks to be in fantastic form, but the ground situation is not ideal.

Alan King's Montbazon (10/1 William Hill), third in the County Hurdle at Cheltenham and seventh in the Scottish Champion Hurdle at Ayr, tops the weights.  It looks a difficult ask to carry top weight to victory and every drop of rain that falls will not help his chances either.

Barizan (14/1 Betfred) won the race 12 months ago for Evan Williams and is back to defend his crown, this time under the tutelage of Donald McCain, who also runs Life And Soul (16/1 bet365).

Dubawi Island (6/1 Betfred) is unbeaten in three starts over hurdles and also features in the 16-runner field along with smart mare Swing Bowler (12/1 William Hill).

3.30pm Tip – VIBRATO VALTAT (WIN) (5/1 Betfred)

3.50 Ascot

BRONZE ANGEL (25/1 Betfred) has taken a bit of a dive down the ratings and looks worth another chance in this race.  He won the Cambridgeshire off a mark of 95 back in 2012, and is now back on that mark after failing to shine in a truncated campaign in 2013.  He missed the bulk of the season and returned just in time to defend his title in the ultra-competitive handicap, although unsurprisingly it was a big ask and he failed to shine.  With first-time blinkers in place Newbury last month, the horse offered a glimmer of hope in finishing seventh in a hot handicap and a further 1lb ease in the weights puts him back on his last winning mark now.

Purcell (14/1 Ladbrokes) for Andrew Balding looked an outpaced fourth over course and distance back in October, so stamina looks the issue here.  Richard Hannon’s Brownsea Brink (14/1 William Hill) is a progressive type and was below best at this track back in October.  The rain we’ve had won’t be to his advantage either, and others may handle the conditions better.

RUWAIYAN (25/1 Coral) comes from a tough family and he was an impressive winner when back on turf on his latest start.  His double figure odds look generous for a horse that is improving.
