This Saturday racing fans are spoilt with Champions Day at Ascot and, although the recent rain has reduced the quality of the fields, there are still plenty of betting opportunities on offer.

1.45 Ascot 

Newmarket trainer Michael Bell is pretty sweet on the chances of BIG ORANGE (12/1 Ladbrokes) a three-year-old who has won his last two outings at Chester and here at Ascot.  He has enough knee action to suggest the softer ground will bring about even more improvement and he should run well.  It’s a really tough race (Forgotten Rules intrigues me and could be anything), but my selection should run in to a place at a rewarding price at least.

3.30 Ascot 

Richard Hannon has been constantly frustrated by NIGHT OF THUNDER (11/4 bet365) who has basically disappointed since winning the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.  He is certainly expected to appreciate the cut in the ground more than most of his rivals and has been working like his old self on the gallops of late.  Connections will be desperate to get another win before they even consider retiring him to stud and he looks set to run well.

4.05 Ascot

CIRRUS DES AIGLES (11/8 Coral) may be an eight-year-old but he holds his form remarkably well and we know he handles severely testing ground.  Free Eagle looks to be the one he needs to beat but he has already had his own, well-documented, issues and at the prices I just about prefer the mount of Christophe Soumillon today. 

4.45 Ascot 

The final leg of our e/w accumulator represents the biggest risk of them all today but even so, CORNROW (12/1 Betfred) is better than we saw at Newmarket and well worth another chance.  He will not be any fitter, as he is anything but lazy at home, and the going is a question mark (never raced on anything this soft) however, if John Gosden lets him take his chance he could finish in the frame.
