The Group One Irish Champion Stakes is the feature of Leapordstown’s racing card on Saturday and we are set for one of the races of the season.
Aiden O’Brien’s Declaration of War is the 5/2 current favourite ahead of Al Kazeem at 13/5 and The Fugue (10/3). O’Brien’s stable star has had a busy season but he has ran in a number of Group Ones with great credit including two wins, one at Royal Ascot before his Juddmonte International triumph at York last time out.
He had Al Kazeem trailing behind in that York contest and connections of that horse were disappointed the ground looked set to be good to firm however a change in weather has convinced them to take their chance. The Lord Lloyd Webber owned The Fugue could be the main contender to Declaration of War. She won the Yorkshire Oaks with a spectacular return to form and if she retains that form will be a realistic challenger to the market leader.
The big hope for Ballydoyle this season was Kingsbarns after his 2012 Racing Post Trophy success but injury has ruled him out of almost all of his three year old campaign however his declaration in this race is interesting and at 6/1 it would be foolish to rule him out of the reckoning.
Aiden O’Brien has won this race seven times in the past and he has a prime hand for another assault at the Irish Champion Stakes on Saturday. Declaration of War looks set to have his ideal conditions barring consistent rain and his high cruising speed and devastating turn of foot makes him the ideal contender to give his trainer an eighth success in the race.
