Liverpool v Newcastle Betting Tips and Predictions

As a thrilling Premier League campaign comes to an end, the neutral's favourite Liverpool will be looking to close out their season in style against a Newcastle side that looked to have one foot on the beach at Christmas. Tune in to Sky Sports 2 at 3PM this Sunday and here are some free football betting tips for you.

After being done absolutely no favours by their Merseyside neighbours last weekend, Liverpool travelled to Selhurst Park looking for a big win to keep their title challenge alive. With a three goal advantage before the hour, things could not have gone any better for Brendon Rogers' men. However, unless you've been living with your head in the sand for the last week, I'm sure you know what happened next. In truth, Liverpool could not continue in the manner they had become so accustomed to playing, and it was only a matter of time before someone shut them out in 90 minutes and someone took advantage of those defensive frailties. It was just such a shame this happened in their last two games. Of course everyone will point to 'that' slip by Steven Gerrard, but it has been these perpetual lapses at the back that are likely to cost Liverpool the title.

Despite their last two results, people must not forget the 2013/14 season has been a success for The Reds and they have exceeded all expectations. Even though one point from their last two games is poor, they did actually win the eleven matches before that, thrashing Arsenal, Spurs and Manchester United in the process. However, they are now as long as 18/1 to lift the league crown, a truly horrid tumble from being 1/6 favourites. Nevertheless, stranger things have happened and it is certainly in Big Sam's nature to potentially frustrate City. The flip side to this is, West Ham actually need to score as well. In a nutshell, if Liverpool win and City lose, the title heads to Anfield. A draw at The Etihad would leave Liverpool chasing a 13-0 win, which needless to say is about as likely as Jose Mourinho landing a jumbo jet on Anfield Road. For those die hard Liverpool fans that still believe though, 13-0 is a 500/1 telephone bet with William Hill, and yes, I did feel stupid asking for a quote on that.

Potential party poopers Newcastle head to Merseyside having recently ended a six game losing streak and relegating Cardiff City in the process. After such a fantastic start to the season, 2014 quickly turned into a nightmare for Alan Pardew's men. The Magpies clearly had enough quality to avoid any threat of the drop but as results began to go against them, it was soon evident they had little chance of snatching any of the European positions as well. In fairness, it is perhaps understandable that motivation levels have dropped leaving Newcastle treading water for the last few months. However, this is where the manager earns his crust, and it is up to Pardew himself to rally his troops. Of course the sale of Yohan Cabaye has been key, but the fiasco surrounding Hatem Ben Arfa has been shambolic. Granted the Frenchman is clearly a handful, but the world and his mother can see he's Newcastle's best player. Surely something has to change at St James' Park because Newcastle can and should do so much better.

Browsing the early prices for Sunday's clash, bookies have Liverpool as understandable 2/9 favourites, as always, this is a little too short to back outright. Further afield, Newcastle are on offer at odds as long as 14/1, with the draw available at 6/1. Whilst these prices are not very appealing, one has to bear in mind that an early goal for City would see the Anfield atmosphere fall flat as a pancake. Nonetheless, it is difficult to look past any other outcome than a home win. Based on the season's statistics, The Reds have scored first at home 83% of the time, 44 of their 99 goals this season have come between the minutes of 16 and 45, and they have the highest number of first half goals in the league this term. With all these facts in mind, back Liverpool to be winning at half time and full time at 8/13 with Bet365 and there being a match goal between 16 and 31 minutes at Evens with William Hill. Although these aren't the best odds in the world, the second bet serves to offer some insurance for the 8/13 banker, whilst maintaining it's appeal as Liverpool's statistically best period for scoring.

Heading into the goalscoring markets, given Liverpool's formidable goal record at Anfield, Sunday's match is a terrific candidate for a firm favourite of mine, Betfred's DD/HH offer. Although poorly priced at 2/1, player of the year Luis Suarez is behind only Ronaldo and Messi in Europe for scoring multiple goals in games this season, thus significantly increasing the appeal of the bet. Needing only one more strike to top the all time Premier League scoring chart, the Uruguayan is going to hell-bent on getting one over on Shearer and Ronaldo. Back him at a potentially prosperous 2/1 with Betfred along with Martin Skrtel to score anytime at 13/2 with the same bookmaker. Liverpool have the best record in the division from a dead ball with 24 goals coming from a set piece, the Slovakian has scored seven of these himself and is the highest scoring defender in the Premier League this season.
