Maybank Malaysian Open 2014 Golf Betting Tips & Preview- A week on from the Masters 2014 and there is no rest in world of golf, Westwood is the favourite here after fine 7th place finish, a performance which showed both the return of his fine ball striking but also his fragility with those all important tough birdie putts in the majors.  Champions here over the last 3 year’s Aphibarnrat, Oosthuizen and Manassero are all in attendance in what should be a fine event.

The Event

The Kuala Lumpar Golf and Country Club plays at just 7,000 yards, and a horses for courses track where many of the players near the top of the market have multiple Top 20 finishes.  The course contains plenty of variation with tricky shorter par 3’s and 4’s and a 600 yard Par 5 finishing hole, but what type of player should prevail?  It is not an easy question to answer as the previous winners do not provide an obvious trend, with both Aphibarnrat and Oosthuizen being longer, more aggressive players and Manaserro more of your accurate, precision player.

I have opted for players with excellent ball striking and decent power from the tee, although water does come into play on 13 of the holes; players with length and decent GIR percentage from the tee have often occupied the top few spots of the leader board.  A decent scrambling week as always will pay dividends, but this will need to be in combination with hitting a significant amount of greens.

Entirely possible this event could be cut to 54 holes, much like last year (indeed most years here) the weather is likely to hot, humid and plenty of opportunity for delays due to potential lightening.

Main picks

Lee Westwood- 10/1 Win – Betfred – Open a new Betfred account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Plays tremendously in Asia, returned to fine form in the Masters last week and Billy Foster back on the bag.  He suggested after his final round on Sunday that the Masters came a couple of weeks too early for him, but as soon as Westwood is back in the Top 10 of tournaments his confidence rises quickly, I am confident he could well return to winning form this week.

Rafa Cabrera-Bello- 22/1 EW – Betfred – Open a new Betfred account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Excellent form so far in 2014 with 3 top 5 finishes in his last six events, also has a good record in this event with finishes of 3rd and 4th in 2012 and 2011 respectively.  Fits the profile we are looking for ranked 20th in driving distance and 2nd in GIR over the last few months, also leads the overall ranking in that time period.  Very happy with 22/1 when you consider the players priced the same or less than him have all travelled back from the Masters, Bello on the other hand is well rested and will be looking to add a win to his fine start to 2014.

Peter Uihlein- 50/1 EW – Ladbrokes – Open a new Ladbrokes account by clicking this link, and get a £50 free bet!

On debut here but that did not stop Manaserro winning in 2011, a long hitter who had a tremendous 2013 season challenging consistently in the mid to late season on the European tour.  Ranked a slightly concerning 71st in GIR over the past few month’s but in the Top 20 in putting average, if he is driving well he should be able overpower the shorter holes on the course, and rely on some fine putting to keep the bogies off the card.  We will not be seeing 50/1 for Uihlein for much longer if his form returns to anything like that of last year.

Alvaro Quiros- 66/1 EW – Bet365 – Open a new Bet365 account and receive a 100% deposit bonus up to £200!

Slowly but surely he is working his way back into form, MC in his outing on the PGA tour in Puerto Rico, but prior to that he finished 5th in Joburg shooting 4 straight rounds in the 60’s.  Like Uihlein above is a huge hitter, ranked 2nd in driving distance over the last few months and also a mightily impressive 7th in GIR in the same spell; it’s only the putter that has held him back, he is a confidence player, so when they start dropping his putter could stay hot all week.

Seve Benson- 80/1 EW – Betfred – Open a new Betfred account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

In the most consistently impressive form of any of the picks this week; Benson finished in T3 last time out in the Trophee Hassan and T10 in the Joburg Open prior to that, has missed just one cut all season and that was back in early December.  Also an excellent statistical match to the profile I’m looking for this week, ranked 19th in both driving distance & GIR over recent months combined with excellent putting over the same spell.  As with Uihlein the fact he is on debut here does not concern me, especially considering his excellent recent form.
