The favourite in the market is set to be Fiorente (8/1 Ladbrokes) who is trained by Gai Waterhouse and after a strong finish in the Cox Plate has every right to be high on the punters shortlist. Dandino (10/1 Ladbrokes) trained by Newmarket based Marco Botti finished second in last week’s Caulfield Cup and this globe trotter is also one to note.

As the runners head past the winning post after a long slog of two miles it is hard to believe that the Luca Cumani trained Mount Athos (9/1 Betfred) will not be bang there. The trainer has had seven attempts to win this race in previous years and following a very creditable 5th last year in the race, he believes that his globe trotter will be on the premises to land the spoils this time round and he makes up our first Melbourne Cup betting tip.

Another British raider that could be worth a market check is the former England footballer Michael Owen’s Brown Panther (18/1 Coral). The five year old has a good deal of both speed and stamina in waiting and because of the nature of the flat track could be one that sneaks into place money at a price. After landing in Australia earlier this week he is said to be very well in himself and is all primed for a big run come Tuesday.

Former winners of the race Dunaden and last year’s victor Green Moon are also re entered for a shot at the Cup.
