Netherlands v Australia Betting Tips and Predictions

Holland resume their World Cup campaign on Tuesday and we have free World Cup 2014 betting tips.

In the second round of fixtures in Group B Australia meet the Netherlands in Porto Alegre, apparently it’s colder there, so the climate, one of the few advantages Australia may have had, won’t be an issue. The ease with which Louis Van Gaal’s Dutch side swept aside reigning champions Spain will have Tim Cahill and co. quaking in their boots.

You can currently get the Netherlands at 1/4 to win the game with Bet 365 (and a handful of other places), Australia at 15/1 (also Bet365) and the draw is 11/2 with Boylesports.

Any outcome other than a Netherlands win looks frankly a bit absurd. Australia were woeful at the back against a Chile side who should have scored more, if the Netherlands are as ruthless as they were against Spain it could well be a cricket score, especially if the Socceroos don’t improve drastically. The odds are so short it’s going to have to be a handicap result if you’re betting on the outcome, Netherlands -2 is tempting at 8/5 with Betfred.

In an attacking sense Australia will be pleased they managed to score against a Chile side who looked comparably shaky at the back in their first game, Cahill’s aerial presence will be a nuisance and on his day he can cause any defence real problems. However, the way that Ron Vlaar handled first Diego Costa and then Fernando Torres makes me think it’s unlikely for Australia to get a goal. Australia lack the creativity and penetration of Spain, they may opt to sit back and try to hit the Netherlands on the counter, but given how well the Dutch attacked against Spain that may be a dangerous tactic.

I’m expecting Netherlands to control the game from the start, an early goal would demoralise Australia and could lead to them getting 5 or 6. Both teams saw over 3.5 goals in their first games and I think they’ll be plenty of goals in this one too, you can get over 3.5 goals at 11/8 with Coral.

Van Gaal may be tempted to rotate his squad which would probably be the best chance to get something from the game; even then I’d still think a second string Dutch team would be good enough to beat a first string Australian team.

The fact that he might use other players makes it harder to predict who the first goal scorer will be, if Van Persie starts you can get him as first goal scorer at 10/3 with Bet365, although Schalke forward Klaas Jan Huntelaar may be given a chance to impress, in which case he’s 4/1 to be the first goal scorer. I’m expecting Wesley Sneijder to get a bit more space against Australia than he did against Spain, so I’d go for Sneijder to score at any time, odds for that are 5/2 with Betfred.

I can’t see Australia having much of the ball let alone mustering many shots on targets. I think Van Gaal will keep a relatively settled back four so can’t see Australia scoring, you can get Netherlands at evens to win to nil, with Betfred, those odds seem pretty ridiculous and that’s definitely worth a punt.
