Sunderland took a huge step toward Premier League survival and will feel confident heading into the Tyne-Wear derby having not lost the fixture since August 2011. Sunderland’s turn around has been down to England winger Adam Johnson who’s managed 5 goals in his last 4 games which has lifted the Black Cats out of the relegation zone for the first time since the second week of the season. Vito Mannone has also been a big influence on Sunderland’s turn around, attracting interest from Manchester United in recent weeks. Gus Poyet may call on new signing Ignacio Scocco, who arrived on Thursday from Internacional as he looks to get more goals from his strikers.

Newcastle fans will be reeling after the sale of Yohan Cabaye but they will be able to call on new signing Luuk De Jong who has signed on a season long loan from Borussia Monchengladbach. Loic Remy’s dismissal at Norwich on Tuesday night was unsuccessfully appealed, which leaves Alan Pardew with very few recognised goal scorers, although Shola Ameobi has a good record against Sunderland, scoring 7 goals in 10 games. Papiss Cisse has been out of form and hasn’t been a popular substitute with Sammy Ameobi being the preferred change in recent months.

The out of form strike force from both sides could interest an under 2.5 goals bet. Steven Fletcher is overdue a goal and is a good price at 7/1, but with Johnsons fine form he is a great price at 10/1 with William Hill. Newcastle are naturally clear favourites to win the game based on their home record and their position in the league, which is why I’ve gone for Hatem Ben Arfa to score first. The tricky Frenchman may be more likely to cause an organized Sunderland back line problems with his skill.
