Horse racing betting tips for Day 2 of Newmarket’s July Festival on Friday.
The second day of the July Festival at Newmarket hosts the first Group 1 contest on the meeting with the Falmouth Stakes taking centre-stage. Unfortunately, with the rain continuing to fall the card could well become blighted with non-runners for a second successive day.
An interesting six runner field has assembled for this year’s renewal of the Group 2 Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes. This 2yo contest was won by Lucky Kristale last year before she went on to win the Lowther and there could well be another high class filly in this field.
The once raced Andre Fabre runner HIGH CELEBRITY (4/5 Betfred) looks to be the class act here. By Invincible Spirit, this filly routed a 2yo maiden field at Chantilly with consummate ease over 7f. The step-down in trip should be no problem for her as she showed plenty of early speed that day and she looks very smart indeed.
Dangers do exist though and they include the Ballydoyle representative I Am Beautiful and David Elsworth’s entrant Arabian Queen. The former narrowly won a Group 3 contest on her latest start and seemed to appreciate 6f run on good to firm ground. The latter finished sixth at Royal Ascot in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, a race which looks filled with quality. The step-up in trip should suit as she was doing her best work at the line and she warrants respect.
Andre Fabre is renowned for carefully selecting the horses and races he targets in Britain. Any runner of his that arrives on our shores has to be respected, especially when having produced such a dominant display on her only start to date. If she improves from her first run and copes with 6f then she could prove to be a class above her rivals.
The Group 1 Falmouth Stakes for Fillies and Mares over 1m on the July course is the highlight of day 2 and looked, before the ground deteriorated, to be all about two horses. On form, the two main protagonists are Integral and Sky Lantern however neither has shown their best form on ground with any sort of cut in it and with that in mind it may pay to look past the market leaders with the unsettled forecast and with the rain set to continue to fall.
One who certainly handles soft ground is PURR ALONG (11/1 bet365) who claimed her latest victory on her penultimate start at the Curragh on soft ground. She went on to finish ahead of Sky Lantern but behind Integral in the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot. With conditions set to suit, she may lack the ultimate class of the two at the head of the betting but she should cope with the ground and could take advantage if they falter.
