We have an exciting match-up on Monday Night Football as the 7-2 New England Patriots travel south to take on the 6-3 Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers enter this contest sporting the #1 defense in the NFL giving up just 282 yards per game, and only 13 points allowed per game. The Panthers are also red hot, winning their last five games in a row, and are off of an impressive victory over the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday.

For the Patriots, they are coming off of their bye week and have had two weeks to prepare for this game. Before the bye week, they defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers at home in impressive fashion, putting up over 50 points and looking like the dominant offense that they have shown to be in the past.

For this game, I expect the Patriots to spread things out and throw the ball throughout the game. This is generally their strategy against good defenses, as opposed to challenging them physically with a running game. Therefore, the key for the Patriots offense will be the protection the offensive line can provide for quarterback Tom Brady against the Panthers defensive line. Given that the Patriots are off of their bye week and rested, I am expecting their offensive line to have an extra hop in their step and play well.

The Panthers have an efficient, if not spectacular offense led by quarterback Cam Newton which has been getting the job done lately during their five game winning streak even though they average just 326 yards per game, 16^th best in the league. The problem I see for Carolina is their lack of explosiveness on offense will not allow them to create any separation from the Patriots. Conversely, if the Patriots get down, they have the ability to come back and will stay in the game to the very end so; I am taking the points and betting the New England Patriots.  

There are also some strong trends going for New England in this game.  – The Patriots are 11-1 in their last 12 Monday Night Football games, under Head Coach Bill Belichick, the Patriots are 36-18-1 against the spread as an underdog, and Cam Newton is just 3-14 in his career in one score games (games decided by 7 points or less). In a game expected to be close contest, I think if you can get the Patriots at +3 that is a good bet.
