It's serious! Whilst many teams have secured their place in France 2016, there are still a handful of teams who have not been able to book their place in the tournament. Norway and Hungary are just two of them and they meet here in the 1st leg in Oslo. 

Norway lost to Italy and that coupled with Croatia's victory against Malta meant that Per-Mathias Hogmo's team had to do it the hard way. They are at home in the first leg which gives them chance to stamp their authority on the encounter. They have terrific form here in Norway and Hungary will not relish the visit. 

Their final two qualifiers here ended in 2 wins, 4 goals scored and none conceded. Admittedly the opposition were Malta and Croatia, but the latter are a decent standard and I think that bodes well for this crucial tie. The last goal they conceded here in a competitive fixture was in a 2-1 win over Bulgaria in October 2014. The only competitive defeats here in recent years have been against Italy and Switzerland, a step up from today's opposition. 

The home side have a decent record against their visitors, having beaten them 4-0 ans 3-0 last time the teams met here with Hungary not picking up all 3 points since 1981. 

This is not a situation that either team have found themselves in recently, Norway have only featured once before in the play-offs, losing to Spain whilst Hungary have never got to this stage, but they did beat Yugoslavia in the World Cup play-offs all the way back in 1998. 

 

Hungary had been in okay form before losing 4-3 in Athens in their final group game. That result had no bearing on their position in the group, but it's a huge concern for their management team that they shipped 4 goals to a side who had been notoriously goal shy prior to that encounter. Conceding 4 goals was the most they'd shipped since their 8-1 defeat to Holland back in 2013. 

 

First legs are usually tight, but Norway will not be relishing the return leg as Hungary are a decent prospect at home, losing only to Northern Ireland in the group and to Russia in a friendly. The Norweigans will want to take an advantage there and you feel they would settle for a 2-0 win.
