Open de Espana 2014 Golf Betting Tips and Preview

It would be best all around, most specifically for the European Tour brass, to forget about how the event went last week, a venue which was unplayable due to fog for a high proportion of the schedule; then a tragic fatality (caddie Iain McGregor) on the course with a questionable decision made to play on.  Not an easy decision for them, but from what I have seen the majority of the players/caddies were not convinced it was the right way to go; regardless, all thoughts of everyone involved in golf, in any way, should surely be with Iain McGregors’ family and friends.

Would have been easy to brush over the above and just try and write a positive preview about this week’s event, but win or lose this week – the event’s above should put the outcome into perspective.

Event

This year’s Open de Espana is held over a familiar venue for many of the players, as it has been used for the European Tour Q school final for the last few years- The PGA Catalunya Resort course, it also hosted this event in 2009, won by Thomas Levet.  A 7,172 yard, Par 72 tree lined course which has been lengthened quite considerably since Levet won here with a -18 total of 270 in 2009, with plenty of elevated tee shots and considerable trouble awaiting any stray shots, it should be a venue where accuracy trumps all out power.

Sergio Garcia comes back Europe to play in his home open, and leads the betting at 5/1 after his fine effort in the Players Championship, Francesco Molinari, the ‘evergreen’ Jimenez and Thomas Bjorn are the other star attractions this week.

I have selected players with good ball striking over the last 6 months, who either have reasonable course knowledge, or I believe have a suitable game for the course, carrying in a bit of recent form will not harm as usual, good luck all-

Selections

Rafa Cabrera Bello 40/1 EW- SkyBET- Open a new SkyBET account by clicking this link and get a ‘Risk Free’ £30 bet.

Had sparkling form earlier in the season and although not as hot now, still managed a top ten just 3 weeks back, really the price that appeals here, Bello is ranked 2nd in the overall rankings over the past 6 months and always has a reliable tee to green game, which should be of great benefit this week.  Comparing his price to Garcia, the market is effectively saying Garcia is 8 times more likely to win than Bello, I can’t agree with that – 4 or 5 times more likely to win on current form, maybe and I may well of selected Garcia to win at 8/1, but not at 5’s, Bello is the value play IMO and has a 6th here back in 2009.

Tommy Fleetwood 33/1 EW- William Hill- Open a new William Hill account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Finding some lovely form with an 8th and runners up finish in his last 2 outings, Fleetwood is relatively long and accurate from the tee and unsurprisingly he hits plenty of Greens in regulation as a result, also ranks nicely in the scrambling stats, as ever it will be the putter that will likely decide his fate this week.  Again, the price appeals with Garcia and Molinari considerably shorter than the rest of the field.

Ross Fisher 66/1 EW – Coral- Open a new Coral account by clicking this link bet just £5 and get a free £20 bet!

A recent winner who is a good ball striker, fancied him in the championship a couple of weeks ago but despite finishing an excellent 8th in GIR he could not hole the putts and finished down the field.  My reasons for liking him here are similar, Fisher’s home course of Wentworth has many similar undulations as this layout and is again a tree lined course; in that regard Fisher should feel at home but the putter will need to be hotter than of late.

Gary Stal 175/1 EW- Bet365- Open a new Bet365 account and receive a 100% deposit bonus up to £200!

A big price for the young Frenchman, good pedigree on the course having finished 4th in last year’s Q school, won the French amateur championship by 7 shots in 2011 and won twice in his debut season as a pro on the challenge tour (the first win was over last week’s eventual victor Daniel Brooks, an omen?) Yes, we are relying on his course form a fair amount but he has been showing signs of settling onto the European Tour with 12th and 38th place finishes in his last two events, a place at this price would be more than worthwhile.

Adrien Saddier 125/1 EW- Ladbrokes- Open a new Ladbrokes account by clicking this link, and get a £50 free bet!

Decent recent form in the this part of the world finishing 12th last week in Maderia and 20th in the Challenge de Catalunya (on the Challenge Tour) prior to that, albeit both events were rain/fog shortened.  Excellent start to his Pro career lying 103 in the race to Dubai and 35th in the Chellenge tour rankings, much like Stal above he will highly motivated and confident after recent wins/performances from compatriots Levy and Dubuisson.  Would not be a surprise to see this hot pro start continue with a strong showing from Saddier who already has a top ten this season in the Nelson Mandela Championship, plus a fifth here last year in the Q school.
