Preview WTA Charleston Tournament 2013

Our new Tennis section opens up with this preview of WTA Charleston from our new writer Mike Wood; the event starts Monday and Mike will be back before then with some outright tips and if we are lucky some in-play insight as well, enjoy.

A unique tournament played on green clay dividing the elite draw of the women’s game with it’s sister tournament in Monterey played over the same week. Serena Williams is the defending champion and has won this tournament on the last two occasions in which she’s played (2012 and 2008). The list of players who have won this tournament in recent years contains a mix of big hitters and counter punchers with the likes of Stosur, Wozniacki, Jankovic, Petrova and Lisicki winning here.

There have also been a few surprises in recent history with Vesnina and Safarova reaching the final and a remarkable run for Polana Hercog reaching the semi-finals here last year in her debut performance. Injury concerns over some of the top seeds including Serena and Stosur means there may well be an opportunity for a lesser known name to go deep in the tournament and earn some valuable ranking points. Outright tips and first round picks to follow upon the release of the draw.

WTA Charleston – Outright

Tipping up a player who’s generally regarded as the best in the world and top seed for the tournament may seem like a bit of a cop out on my part but there is some value here on the exchanges. Stan James were first out with their prices, quoting 4/9 for Serena and all the other firms have so far fallen in line apart from Betfred who are slightly bigger at 8/15. Whilst I wouldn’t want to be risking much money on her at this price when I have some concerns over her motivation, (She’s had injuries of late and the tournament isn’t one of the most prestigious) the price for her on Betfair is currently around the evens mark and she’s certainly worth a bet at these odds. The courts at Charleston suit her game far more than a conventional clay court and her success there in the past emphasises this further. Why the price on betfair is so far out of line with the bookies I couldn’t say at the moment, but on home soil and with a few days to recover I’m putting faith in her giving this her best efforts. Stosur (who she’d meet in the final and to me represents her biggest threat on this surface) is still struggling after her calf injury and her participation isn’t guaranteed so my advice is get on before the price goes.

Recommendation – 2 Points Serena Williams. Evens – Betfair.
