Spain v Chile Betting Tips and Predictions

Spain will be desperate for a win in their second World Cup match and we have World Cup 2014 betting tips.

The next round of fixtures in Group B could see the current world champions knocked out of the competition if they do not beat Chile, which would be a huge shock. Chile come off the back of a victory and Spain are coming off a huge loss so there is a lot riding on this game for them.

Spain, current World champions and back to back European champions suffered a heavy and annihilating defeat at the hands of the Netherlands, the team they beat in the 2010 World Cup Final. This was only Spain’s fourth defeat in over 60 matches, however it was the most damaging and the effects of this defeat could see huge ramifications in the personnel of the team as well as the style of play

Spain’s tika-taka football against the total football of the Dutch did not work. The pace upfront stretched the Spanish defence and they could not contain Robben and Van Persie. The midfield of Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets did not have their best games for Spain and Diego Costa, playing in the country of his birth looked a little sluggish in his performance, although it showed Spain were willing to go a bit more direct at times. Additionally, an unusually poor performance for Captain Iker Casillas in goal could bring the end to his illustrious career as Spanish number one. The dominance of Spain could be about to end, although we must not forget that four years ago they lost their opening game to Switzerland, albeit a 1-0 defeat and not a demoralising 5-1 result.

Chile will look to take advantage of the sudden demise of the Spanish contingent. After comfortably winning their opening game 3-1 against Australia, Chile could look to open up the defence of Spain through Alexis Sanchez, who was instrumental in the victory against the Socceroo’s. Chile will have to be a lot more alert in the defensive area, looking susceptible to aerial balls in the box. If Spain can get crosses into Diego Costa then they could enjoy much success against the Chilean centre halves. Chile struggled against the aerial prowess of Tim Cahill in the first match and left the centre backs with no support from the midfield of full back positions.

Chile will feel they can beat Spain and avenge the defeat they suffered from them in the 2010 group stage where they lost 2-1. The midfield area is going to be significant in this match. Players like Arturo Vidal and Andreas Iniesta will hold the key to this game. If Vidal recovers from his injury he has been plagued with and can get through 75 minutes of the game, then Chile’s chances of winning the game will improve. Iniesta will look to dominate the game from the middle of the park, looking to find the killer ball for the wingers, strikers and full backs to get on. Iniesta played a sublime pass into the path of David Silva against the Dutch only to see his effort saved. If he can find that pass again against a weaker defensive opposition then Spain will be favourites to win the game. One thing is guaranteed, there will be plenty of goals in this game so over 3.5 goals looks good at 13/8 with William Hill.
