St Leger – Doncaster Spetember 14th – Ante-Post Preview and Betting Tips

The last classic race of the season is set to take place at Doncaster on September 14th. Here we take a look at the contenders and provide an ante-post tip for the race.

John Gosden has a great record in this race and his Excess Knowledge currently heads the betting for the race. He has won the race four times and three of the last six renewals and will be hoping to add to that record with this son of Monsun. Runner-up to subsequent Irish 1000 Guineas winner Just The Judge as a 2 year-old, he has always shaped as if a test of stamina will suit him and although he has not won since his debut, this has likely been his main aim for some time. Had no luck in running in the Gordon Stakes at Doncaster last time out but with this course and distance set to suit it is easy to see why this unexposed type heads the market.

The Ballydoyle challenge will be strong as always with Queen’s Vase winner Leading Light and the completely unexposed Foundry likely runners. Foundry finished second to Telescope in the Great Voltigeur on just his second career start and despite his inexperience has to be feared on the back of that effort. Leading Light was a good winner at Ascot and showed a willing attitude to get his head in front. Will stay this trip well and is likely to give his running again.

Little separated Galileo Rock and LIBERTARIAN in the Derby at Epsom earlier in the season but Galileo Rock ran a much better race in the Irish equivalent to finish 2^nd, with Libertarian ran no sort of race. The form of the Derby can be questioned but the Irish form looks solid, with Trading Leather running well in Group 1 company since and the 4^th Cap O’Rushes a Group 3 winner since. They should both be suited by this step up in trip and at the current prices it is worth chancing Libertarian. He needs to bounce back from a poor run in the Irish Derby but his win in the Dante and his run at Epsom give him a solid form chance. The Irish Derby was run at a frantic pace and that run can be written off; been given plenty of time since and offers some each-way value in the race
