Sunday Racing Best Bets From Ascot & Pontefract

Horse racing betting tips covering the best of the racing action on Sunday from Pontefract and Ascot.

Despite generally small fields, the racing on Sunday are generally tricky contests. Nevertheless, i’ve made my selections and offered up a tip from both Ascot and Pontefract.

4.05 Pontefract

The feature race at Pontefract is a Listed contest run over a mile. This is a marked drop in class for ELLEVAL (11/2 bet365) who has run in Group company on his latest three starts. He is entitled to have come on for his latest run at the Curragh when returning from a three month absence and, despite the drop in trip probably not being ideal, the stiff nature of the track should suit.

The main dangers look to be Custom Cut, who could get an easy time of things on the front, and Artigiano. Both would appreciate more cut in the ground however, with a penalty for the former making things trickier still. Highland Knight would have a chance on his best form but we see that sparingly these days.

4.15 Ascot

Only a small field for this mile and a quarter handicap but four of the six were successful on their last start. Raise Your Gaze finally got off the mark at Sandown last time in decent style. He had been beaten three times previously off that same mark so a 10lb rise looks harsh. Lugarno Palace has won two of his three starts this season but a Class 5 Wolverhampton maiden and a 0-80 handicap last time are a different kettle of fish to this task.

Redkirk made a very impressive debut at Yarmouth when taking a maiden field apart by five lengths. The second that day is the only one who has reappeared since but was beaten out of sight so it's tough to work out exactly what Redkirk achieved. AGENT MURPHY (2/1 SkyBet) on the other hand looks to have much stronger form, following up a maiden win at Bath with a tenacious display at Sandown. The horse he beat into second that day has won two handicaps since so a mark of 89 shouldn't be too much trouble for Brian Meehan's charge and he rates a decent bet.
