Cheltenham Festival 2015 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle Tip

Douvan is the short priced favourite to get the Willie Mullins bandwagon rolling straight away.  He has been effortless in both his wins in Ireland this season, latterly in a Grade 2 at Punchestown when winning with chunks in hand.  The question he will likely have to answer refers to the ground because  he has never encountered anything better than soft and the Cheltenham going is likely to be quicker given the lack of rain on the recent weather forecasts for Cheltenham.

L'Ami Serge has the same questions to answer having also never run on anything quicker than soft.  His form has more substance than Douvan with better horses behind in all three of his wins.  He appears to have improved massively whilst with Nicky Henderson – before the switch he had failed to win in six starts in France but that does raise questions over whether he will be able to show the necessary improvement needed in order to win the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham.

JOLLYALLAN (15/2 William Hillis a monster of a horse who is an early fancy of mine for the 2016 Arkle.  Despite being beaten in his last race at Sandown, he enhanced his reputation when getting out battled by hardened handicapper Garde La Victoire.  He still looked green under pressure on that occasion but will have benefitted from that education and, as he travels so well, the hectic pace that is the norm in the Supreme should suit.

It's easy enough to forgive his runs on very soft this season with trainer Dermot Weld likely to have had this contest mapped out since last season.

This is a far more open contest than the market suggests with both Douvan and L'Ami Serge very impressive to date.  Nevertheless, the likelihood is that the ground will be considerably quicker than both have encountered to date so both have to prove they can handle conditions.  With that in mind Jollyallan looks the best Cheltenham day 1 tip for the Supreme Novices Hurdle.  If he can brush-up on his hurdling technique then improvement is highly likely and he has a massive engine with plenty of form on better ground.

When we first put up Jollyallan as our betting tip for the Supreme Novices Hurdle 2015 he was priced at 12/1, that has now been backed all the way into 15/2 and could carry on getting shorter so if you are betting, do it as soon as possible to get the best odds.
