3.20 Ascot

Mark Johnston is making hay while the sun shines with his three-year-old handicappers and the filly MAID IN RIO (9/4 Ladbrokes) may get even better stepping up to two miles for the first time. On breeding she can't stay a mile and a quarter but, as she has already won over a mile and three quarters, we have yet more evidence that the breeders art is not an exact science. Off bottom weight here, including her 6lb penalty, she is certainly worth the risk that she has the requisite stamina to get the trip.

7.30 York

Oh dear – Godolphin are hardly having one of their better years and I rarely seem to pick the right time to back any of them yet with TASADAY (6/4 Coral) they have the worthy favourite in what looks a trappy contest. A Meydan Listed winner over this trip, both the good to firm ground conditions and the 10f on offer will suit. Carry top weight will certainly be a hindrance but, as she is clear on official ratings by at least albs she should be able to assert her dominance over the field. Once concern would be that his will be her first start on British soil but her trainer will undoubtedly have put her through plenty of work at home.

8.10 Newmarket

Luca Cumani is another Newmarket trainer not having a year to remember but he has started to hit the target in recent weeks and CONNECTICUT (11/10 William Hill), a son of New Approach, has added twice to that tally already this season. Last time out he got up by a head at York despite having to fight for room at a vital stage and, with a clear run and the extra quarter mile on offer today, he may well shrug off his 5lb weight increase. As a three-year-old taking on his elders we don't know if he will be up to the task but the race conditions give him a 12lb advantage which will clearly be in his favour.
