4.00 Musselburgh

This Class 3 handicap over 1m6f looks a competitive contest with a number of well-fancied runners taking part.

ALEX MY BOY (6/5 William Hill) is the youngest runner, and sole three-year-old, in this contest, however he looks a worthy favourite.  This Mark Johnston representative has faced far stiffer challenges of late and took a competitive handicap at Haydock with ease last time out.  Despite being raised 8lbs for that effort, Mark Johnston’s colt should continue to show improvement.  His entry in the St Leger emphasises the kind of regard in which this horse is held and his trainer certainly would not be making the long drive across the border unless he thought his representative had a real chance.

Dark Ruler has been in solid form this campaign and is yet to finish outside of the top three.  He possess a 100% strike-rate at the Scottish track and, after a good third in better company at Epsom last time, the five-year-old has been stepped-up in trip, a tactic which should be of considerable benefit.

7.05 Tipperary

We have a solid Listed race for 2yos on offer here and powerhouse trainer Dermot Weld’s TOMBELAINE (9/4 Betfred) looks more than capable of landing this prize.  The form he has shown to date looks far too strong for the rest of the field, winning on racecourse debut ahead of Highland Reel, who went on to land a Group 2 at Goodwood with ease, followed by finishing second to Gleneagles when slightly unlucky not to win.  I really like the look of this horse, as he travels so fluently and quickens well, and he should take all the beating.

East India represents the Aidan O’Brien stable who have claimed this contest three times in the last six years.  This horse won on debut last time out at The Curragh, despite being the stable’s second string runner.  He has a classy pedigree as a colt by Galileo and, if he can improve again, he will offer the biggest threat to the selection.
