Volvo China Open 2014 Betting Tips & Predictions

After Lee Westwood's fine runaway victory in Malaysia last week (thank you Lee), who will triumph in the Volvo China Open?  A new course for the event as has become standard and this is a belter, built in the grounds of a former botanical gardens the players will be playing over the catchy ‘A Course’ at the venue; no course form to go on, but a strong field and spectacular setting should keep us entertained.

The Event

Course A at Shenzhen Genzon Golf Club plays at 7,145 yards and has a par of 72, following the contours of a natural lake water comes into play on a number of holes; especially over what looks to be a touch closing 4 holes, comprising of a long par 3, two tough 4’s and the 575 yard Par 5 17th.  Although not overly long the course appears have a nice blend of short & long Par 4’s, testing Par 3’s and reachable Par 5’s, decision making on how to approach some of the excellent risk/reward holes could be a significant factor this week.

As for the field, well some of the PGA tour regulars have made the trip over this week, the field is led by Stenson, Dufner and Poulter but European tour regulars such as Gallacher and Molinari also return to the European tour for this fine event.

But, what type of player do we think will prevail this week? The course looks to be a fine test, although with winds expected to be light for the 4 days and potential rain forecast for Saturday & Sunday, I have a feeling scoring will be good.  In-form players who can shoot consistently low numbers should prevail, rather than players who can tough out the really challenging tracks, with the amount of water awaiting stray tee shots I have also selected fine ball strikers who combine power and accuracy from the tee and on approach.  Here we go, good luck this week all.

Back to form with a T2 last week in Malaysia, struck the ball beautifully and grazed the edge of the cup with many of his putts, Colsaerts supreme ball striking and natural/easy power combined with his renewed confidence should make him a real threat this week.  Always sits close to the top of the total driving and GIR stats (1^st last week in GIR), his power should be an asset on the reachable Par 5’s and long Par 3’s, we simply need his putter to warm up a bit, would be very surprised if he not in the Top 10 this week.

My Favourite this week, Powerful consistent ball striking like Colsaerts above, but has been in better putting form and looked excellent in closing round 70 last week finishing Tied 5th.  Lies 3^rd in total driving and 5^th in GIR on the European tour over the past few months, combined with a respectable 33^rd ranking in total putting over the same period; is well rested having had a long break prior to last week and should be full of confidence after a fine showing.

Coming off 4 weeks off which may be of some concern, but had a two week layoff prior to his last victory in the Tshwane Open, so he should be capable of performing straight out of the blocks, another sound ball striker who lies 18^th in ball striking over the last 6 months on the European tour.  His win in the Tshwane Open was his first for 4 years, this course should play in a similar way to his home course of Wentworth with its risk reward holes and slight elevation changes so I have a felling Fisher will feel right at home.  40/1 provides good each way value on a multiple European tour winner who has returned to form recently.

Returned to action with a fine T5 finish last week after a long layoff, his putting last week was the key to his success, finishing 1^st in putts per GIR and 10^th in putting average, but his ball striking is his usual strength and that was still solid (23^rd in GIR last week) and that should improve further as his game sharpens.  Two previous victories in Italy and Spain have both been due to hitting a high percentage of GIR and backing it up with some impressive putting, he looks primed to repeat that type of performance.

A hugely impressive win in the recent Trophee Hassan has set up this season wonderfully for Canizares, and that performance in Morocco resulted in a 5 stroke winning margin set up by a stunning opening round of 62 for a wire to wire victory.  He ranked 1^st in GIR that week and despite his 2 missed cuts since, I am confident he has the right game for this course, much like the Golf du Palais Royal this course is set in picturesque surrounding, with some room off the tee but tricky greens to contend with.  Also has a tendency to shoot consistently low rounds when he hits his stride, something which will I feel will be required this week.
