Wednesday’s Champions League Quarter Final Preview

Tonight sees Malaga, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Galatasary go into battle as they each attempt to progress to the last four of the Champions League.  Both matches are being played on Spanish soil, but does that necessarily give the La Liga sides a first-leg advantage?

Down in the south of Spain, Malaga host Borussia Dortmund in a match the home support will hope turns into a memorable occasion.  Under the astute leadership of Manuel Pellegrini,  Malaga have had an inspired maiden voyage into this competition, and have been particularly strong at home where they have won four of their five home Champions League matches.

Borussia Dortmund are now the only unbeaten team left in this year’s competition and have defeated some top quality opposition en route to the quarter-finals, notably Real Madrid and Manchester City.  The German side are clearly a crack outfit who play sublime counter-attacking football, and have used that style to great advantage on the road in this competition this season, scoring a total of nine goals.  Expect this to be an open, entertaining game with a few goals.

Best bet:  Over 2.5 goals – even money with Betfred

In the Spanish capital, Real Madrid host Galatasary at The Bernabeu and, as you would expect for a side who are undefeated in 30 of their last 33 Champions League matches, Los Blancos are strong favourites to win the match.  And the record of José Mourinho in this competition speaks for itself, winning 13 of the 16 European home matches he has overseen as Real coach.  Although strong at home in this competition, Real have not been bomb-proof at the back, having conceded in their last eight consecutive home Champions League matches.

There is no doubt that Galatasary are up against it in Madrid, although they are sure to try and nick a valuable away goal.  With a quality front-pairing of Didier Drogba and Burak Yilmaz, there is every chance that they can do just that.  Yilmaz is the competition’s joint top-scorer with eight goals, the same number of goals his side have scored in four away Champions League matches this season.  Real will justify their short-odds favouritism in this one, but the better-value bet is on goals.
