The racing action looks set to be blighted by bad weather once again and racing fans may well suffer another weekend with a few solitary meetings on offer. With Taunton already planning an early morning inspection and the forecast for further rain around the country, ground conditions are certain to be dire. Haydock and Ascot seem relatively optimistic about their chances so I’ve selected two bets from their respective cards.
My best bet of the afternoon comes in the 2.05pm at Haydock where Nicky Henderson’s STAND TO REASON (9/2 Betfred) puts his unbeaten record over hurdles on the line. He has been a revelation since changing stables, having been trained initially by Mikael Magnusson during his flat career. His latest victory came at Newbury where his winning effort marked him down as a horse definitely worth following. Although I would prefer if he were a bit slicker over his hurdles, he should keep on improving with experience and is my idea of the best bet of the afternoon!
One horse I’m really looking forward to seeing this weekend is CALL THE COPS (6/1 BetVictor). This horse looks to be improving with experience and I am told will be well suited by the step up in trip on offer in the 4.05pm at Ascot. He won his bumper a shade comfortably but failed to jump with much (or any) fluency on his hurdling bow when finishing a frankly disappointing third. He was clearly well schooled at home thereafter and duly obliged by hacking up last time out at Towcester. He’s in receipt of 4lbs pounds from the favourite Champagne West (7/4 Betfred), and that difference could well tip the scales in his favour.
