Wells Fargo Championship 2014 Betting Tips and Preview

Well last week left a lot to be desired. Seung Yul-Noh won his first tournament and we ended up missing out on all of our futures. It’s definitely tough, but we push on and try to improve every week. This week the PGA Tour travels to the great state of North Carolina. Where the players will compete at Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte for this years Wells Fargo Championship.

Quail Hollow is a traditional par 72 golf course with 4 par 4’s and 4 par 5’s. It stretches over 7400 yards so it will certainly strain some golfers from a length perspective. This tournament debuted in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship and has been played at Quail Hollow every year since. The course was the talk of the TOUR last year as the greens here were in terrible shape. Not only have the greens been redone with MiniVerde Bermudagrass, several of the holes have been redesigned as well. This includes the challenging 16th hole which serves as the first hole in a three hole stretch known as the green mile.

Due to the length of the course and the length of the par 3’s, most of the scoring will occur on the par 5’s here. Players that take advantage here should have a leg up on the field for the week. Seeing that distance is preferred over accuracy, we also want to look at total driving and ball striking.

Past Winners:

Derek Ernst – 2013

Rickie Fowler – 2012

Lucas Glover – 2011

Rory McIlroy – 2010

Sean O’Hair – 2009

We have a full field this week in Charlotte and some big names that will be teeing it up as well. Names that include, Rory, Phil, Webb Simpson, Fowler, Rose, and Westwood.

It looks like rain is in the forecast for both Tuesday and Wednesday which should soften the course up and make it play a bit longer. There is chance for rain again on Friday, but the weekend looks great. I don’t expect to see scores as low as we saw last year, but some of the longer players should be able to attack pins with the wet conditions.

Let’s look at some picks:

Rory McIlroy to Win: 15/2 Coral Open a new Coral account by clicking this link bet just £5 and get a free £20 bet!

Short price but Rory has the game for this course. He’s played here 4 times, has 3 top 10’s, 1 win, and 1 runner up. Rory is one of the longer players on TOUR and if he can find his way around the par 5’s this week, I expect his name at the top of the leaderboard.

Rickie Fowler e/w: 33/1 Ladbrokes Open a new Ladbrokes account by clicking this link, and get a £50 free bet!

Fowler played surprisingly terrible golf last week. I am thinking that was more of a blip on the radar than the expectation going forward. Rickie is an aggressive player and should really be able to take advantage of the par 5’s at Quail Hollow. He also ranks 36th in total driving.

Ryan Moore e/w: 40/1 Betfred Open a new Betfred account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Moore has been pretty quiet for the last couple of months but I think this is a course that suits his game. Moore is 36th in total driving and a whopping 6th in greens in regulation. That means he will have a lot of birdie opportunities. Converting those opportunities is where the rubber meets the road. Moore should be up to the challenge. He also finished 6th here in 2013 and 5th in 2012.

Gary Woodland e/w: 50/1 William Hill Open a new William Hill account by clicking this link and get a free £25 bet.

Woodland is a super long player who should really be able to attack this course. This course isn’t the most penal and plays around the same yardage as Augusta National. The greens obviously aren’t as severe, but that should give Woodland some confidence. Woodland is 4th in total driving and 2nd in ball striking. This tournament has seen its’ fair share of winners in their 20’s. Woodland could be the next.

Matt Jones e/w: 66/1 Bet365 Open a new Bet365 account and receive a 100% deposit bonus up to £200!

The hangover from winning the Shell Houston Open should be gone and Jones should be back to business. Jones has a top 10 finish here and is a pretty long player as well. Jones ranks 18th in total driving and 29th in par 5 average. Worth the long shot.

Good Luck.
