World Hurdle Ante-Post Cheltenham Betting Tips

Ante-post preview of the World Hurdle on Day 3 of the Cheltenham Festival 2015.

The highlight on Thursday at the Cheltenham Festival is the World Hurdle, the premier contest for the staying hurdling division.  It's a race that has been dominated this century by a select few with Baracouda, Inglis Drever and Big Bucks all multiple winners.  This year’s renewal looks to be a wide open affair with plenty in with chances.

MORE OF THAT (7/2 Betfred) heads the market in a bid to become the latest in the line of repeat victors.  We have only seen him once so far this season when bitterly disappointing at Newbury in the Long Distance Hurdle. The ground was probably a bit too deep for him on that occasion and it was the start of a desolate time for the Jonjo O’Neill yard so that effort is easily forgiven.  His trainer is a master at getting horses primed for the Festival so it would be no surprise, back on better ground, to see him leave that Newbury running well behind.

Saphir Du Rheu (7/1 Paddy Power) showed he has the stamina credentials to succeed over this 3m trip with a battling win last time on his return to the smaller obstacles.  Whilst he is a young and unexposed staying hurdler, it is likely that he will  encounter relatively quick ground come March, soothing which raises concerns especially considering his distinctly moderate effort in the 2013 renewal of the Fred Winter.

There would be few more popular winners than Rock On Ruby (10/1 bet365) with the ten-year-old having shown plenty of sparkle in two course wins this season.  He's late in his career to be trying this trip for the first time but does look as if he will stay on this season’s efforts.  Zarkandar (10/1 Ladbrokes) is another experienced stager who has fully proved his stamina for the trip although showed signs, especially last time out when stopping in front, that he has a bit of temperament to contend with.

BEAT THAT (16/1 Ladbrokes) could easily be the biggest danger to the favourite.  Good ground is ideal for this horse, with wins over this trip at both the Spring Festivals at Aintree and Punchestown last season emphasising his liking for a sound surface.  He travelled beautifully on his return before fading late on and should strip much fitter for that outing and looks a solid each-way option.

If we discount his sole run this season, MORE OF THAT would be closer to even money in this contest, the current price looks huge with much better likely from a yard that has an uncanny knack of producing the best at the Cheltenham Festival in March.  BEAT THAT looks to be the biggest danger, travelling ominously well on his return before getting tired.  He should be spot on for the Festival and, at a double figure price, looks worth an inclusion into our ante-post World hurdle betting tips.
